August Trip

Hi Everyone.

We are looking to take a trip in August with my parents and DH. Budget 5k per couple or less, and for around a week. My parents really want to go somewhere cool, since we live in Texas, and in August it can be 100 degrees everyday, and its pretty miserable! Some places in general we want to go are:

New Zealand/ Australia/ Hawaii /Italy/ Moscow/ Lake Louis

DH and I have been to Banff and Lake Louis, and while we LOVED it, we are leaning towards somewhere we have not gone before. In general, I would really want to go to NZ. Is the weather OK in August? I saw on weather.com that the avg in August in Queenstown is 40 degrees, which is OK for us, but I just don't want it to be crazy snowy in the mountains, and roads closed etc.

 Any feedback? TIA

Re: August Trip

  • I don't know about the weather, but I would think that $5k would be really pushing it for NZ.  Flights alone will eat up at least half of that budget.

How about Alaska?  My H and I did AK for 3 weeks a few years ago on less than $5k, including flights from the east coast.

  • I don't think overseas on 5K is going to work. Flights in the summer will be half you budget. Any interest in a cruise to Alaska? Hawaii will be in the 90s during August.

  • Thanks for the info! DH would love to go to Alaska, but I have been there, as well as my parents, but we can keep it on the table. For NZ the budget could be flexible. Maybe up to 7k per couple (one week and we'd share a rental car).

  • You'd be pushing it to go to Italy - it was really expensive when we went (which was back in 2005).

We did Alaska this past year (cruise), and it probably ended up costing about 6K for two of us. We had free airfare also.

  • i think for that budget, you could have a fabulous time in rio de janeiro. we did 8-9 days there in 2009 for $3K. that included flights, our hotel & apt, sightseeing (private tour guide one of those days), and lots of great meals. it was technically winter but we actually had a few great beach days too (and definitely not as hot as texas must be in august).

i can dig up my trip review if you are interested

what about montreal or the east coast of canada?

  • I don't think even 7k would work for New Zealand or Australia.  You could do it bare bones possibly, but wouldn't get the full experience.  Plus, those countries definitely need more than 8 or 9 days.  I'd suggest Alaska, but not doing a cruise especially if you've been there.  You could also look into one of the train rides through Northern Canada.  I've heard that is a wonderful experience.
  • Sounds like maybe I should abandon the idea of NZ and Australia :)

Rio sounds like a great idea, and that never even crossed my mind! Excited!! Cheekywife, do you mind sharing your review? Montreal sounds great too... I'll have to report back to the group! Thanks everyone!
