Anyone make laundry detergent?
I'm completely out and I think I'm going to make my own. It's super cheap and I have a few friends that do it and love it.
My only question is, does it smell good? I know you can add essential oils.
Re: Anyone make laundry detergent?
I personally have not tried, but had a friend do so and ended up with her washing machine in pieces! Something about the pieces of soap not being small enough and clogged a filter screen somewhere. Not sure if you are making powder or liquid. Just thought I would throw this bit of info out there.
I've done it for... 3 years now?
I make it in the food processor, takes a couple of minutes every 6-8 weeks. I don't add anything else to it other than the grated soap, washing soda, and Borax.
All of our clothes smell like the dryer sheet.
I'll be making the liquid.
I make a liquid soap and I love it. It smells good and gets my clothes clean. Here is the recipe that I use:
1 bar Ivory soap (whatever your favorite bar soap is)
1 cup Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda (found on laundry aisle)
1/2 cup Borax
1/2 cup fabric softer (optional - i leave this out)
-Grate the bar of soap and place it into a pot and cover with water.
-Heat the water to simmer and stir until melted (do not boil - simmer only)
-Add this to a 5 gallon bucket (i bought mine super cheap at Home Depot). Add the other listed ingredients above and top up with 5 gallons of hot water.
-Stir the mixture well w/ a paint stirrer or paddle ( i use one of Kevins massive spoons for brewing beer)
-Cover and let sit 24 hours. After 24 hours the stuff should be gelled. (it will look like warm jello, not quite solid but thick). Stir well again to mix and then pour into containers.
