RCI Cruise: Which dining time did you choose?

DH and I are trying to determine which dining time would be the best- Early vs. Late vs. My Time.

Is one time better than the other?

Re: RCI Cruise: Which dining time did you choose?

  • We did My Time and it was the best choice for us - we wanted to be able to eat whenever it was convenient for us and wanted a table for 2.
  • Early so you can enjoy the shows and other nightly activities.
  • We either do late or my time depends on the trip. Early is too early if you want to maximize your port time.  We normally hit the diamond event before dinner that starts at 530 which is a crunch getting back to shower and change before that if we had early seating.  If we do late it runs until 830 so we can take our time.  If ou aren't up there with crown and anchor yet, it is still nice to have time to watch sail away and just relax before rushing off to dinner.   If you go to bed early and want to watch the show you might be better off with first,  late seating show time can vary.

  • Late. This way we don't have to come back early from port to get ready for dinner. Also, we just aren't hungry at that time. Still full from lunch. You can still enjoy the shows and such. Usually there are two seatings- one for early and one for late seating's.
  • We did the early dining.  It is matter of personal preferance but we usually eat dinner pretty early was it was what we were used to.
"You cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness."
  • We were thinking early too since we normally eat around 6pm, but since food is aplenty on the ship, I have this gut feeling DH will eat more than normal and won't be hungry around 6pm/normal dinner time.

I really like the idea of My Time Dining... but wouldn't this be the most popular choice since you can virtually go anytime b/w 6-9:30pm? Are there any differences b/w My Time and Late Dining (other than the actual time)?

  • We really liked the my time dining and would definitely do that again.  A couple of the days we were ready for dinner at 6:00, while there were other days where we did not eat dinner until after 8:00 or 8:30.  It was nice to have the freedom of deciding when we wanted to go- there was never any rushing to get there or eating at a time when weren't hungry yet or had been hungry for 2 hours.

The my time dining is nice in other ways too.  Some nights we requested a table for just the 2 of us, however, there were other nights that we were seated with other couples. I appreciated the variety and option.

I like the flexibility of My Time dining, but are we then not guaranteed a Table for 2? Are we guaranteed a Table for 2 if we did early/late night dining options? Other than the actual time, what are the biggest differences b/w My Time and early/late dining?

  • We sailed on CCL, but I assume that things would be similar.  With the My Time dining, you can request a table for 2 every night if you want.  However, since you don't have a specific dining time, the seating is first come, first serve.  If you go at a busy time and request a table for 2, you may not be able to sit immediately.  They give you a pager and will alert you when they have a table ready for you.  For us, we never waited more than 5-10 minutes and I did not hear anyone complain about ridiculous wait times.

I think the biggest difference between the My Time dining and the traditional dining is the fact that you sit at a different table, among different people, with a different wait staff every night with the my time dining.  That didn't matter to us at all.

Got it- thanks for clarifying :)

  • We tend to cruise with family so about a group of 10 people therefore we never choose flex time. Also, I like having the same wait staff every night, it's better service. We like the early time since we have kids. On port days we would just miss dinner and stop by at the any time dining.

  • LATE! (We didn't have the 'my time' option)

    1. Almost no kids - families with small children tended to book the earlier dinner.

    2. No racing back from shore activities to make dinner. Depending on your exact cruise and schedule, you may have to cut your time at certain ports short in order to make dinner. Or at a minimum feel terribly rushed getting ready. Yes, you might miss out on some of the on ship evening stuff, but frankly, I'd rather have extra time exploring at the stops.
