So in my visit back east for my great-aunt's funeral, I heard and saw some wonderful inspirational and aspirational stories of aging:
* Each year in the retirement community where my parents, grandmother and great aunt live/lived, they have a contest. They collect all the bus tickets from residents to see who went on the most trips. Last year, at 90 years old, my great-aunt won.
* Two doors down from my grandparents' old house in their hometown (where the family burial plot is) is a lady who I have met several times (I was closer and visited more with her sister who lived behind my grandparents). She only recently gave up driving but still plays bridge every week and goes out and hangs up her clothes to dry on her clothes line herself every few days as she does her laundry. She is 101.
* While we were at the retirement community, my mom brought a crazy birthday hat with fake candles and tinsel and stuff to loan to another resident for her birthday (that day). My dad called her the mayor of the cafe because she was often in there socializing. That lady was spry, peppy, ton of energy, sharp as a tack and funny as could be. She was celebrating her 90th birthday.
Hope I'm that energetic at that age!

Re: Inspiring Aging
Thats great!
Both of my grandfathers were still driving and playing golf daily until the day they died (ironically, they both passed away on the same day 3 months ago). They were 97 and 94!
This!
And, I'm so sorry for your loss, K.
Those are great stories!
My grandparents (dad's side) are an inspiration for me. They still live on their own at 93 and 88, are active in their neighborhood (all the kids love them), in church, and until Grandpa's vertigo problems a couple years ago did TONS of square dancing. He even built a second story deck on their house when he was in his 80s, and took my brothers & I skiing from age 70-75ish --and only stopped taking me when I blew out my knee.
I hope I have that kind of life.
