Moms of 3,4,5 year olds....school related

DD will be 4 in May.  We plan on starting her in preschool in the fall.  She's a stay at home kid right now.  So here I go...

Do I put her in preschool 2, 3 , or 5 days a week?  How did u decide.  The school we r sending her to offers those three options.

What makes a good preschool, and what questions should I be asking?

How do I determine when to enroll her in kindergarten?

What do I need to do to make sure she's as prepared as she can be for preschool and kindergarten?

Is there some sort of Manuel or helpful place for me to get info to help me answer all these questions.  I feel so unprepared to send my kiddo to school.  FYI she will be attending mps.

Thanks a ton from this clueless mom.

  • DD (also a stay at home kid) is 3 almost 4 and goes to pre-school 1 day a week this year. We live outside of a small town and that is all the pre-school offers for her age. At age 4 they go 2 days. I honestly think that is too little. She could use at least 2 days a week at age 3. She loves school. Since there isn't anything I can do about the amount of days she can go other than opting her out of our school district and then back in we just deal with it. I work with her at home on letters and numbers and such to make sure she is ready for kindergarten. Good Luck!

  • Here is my input.

I would send her either 2 or 3 days a week. That said, if she is only going to do 1 year of ps before you send her to school, I would do 3 days. Tommy just turned 4 and is going to 2 days but has another year of ps before kinder where he will go 3day. I personally would not just throw her in going 5 as it can be a big adjustment if she is used to being home with you.

I would tour some preschools. Talk to the teachers about how they teach their classes, centers, etc.

I believe the date on when you can send them to kinder has changed and how has an end of July cut-off. So depending on when her birthday is, that might effect when you send her to kinder.

I have noticed with M in kindergarten this year, that there is a large range of what kids know before they go to kinder. That said, I made sure Maren could write, spell and identenify her first and last name, the numbers up to 50 and the letters. I know from working in her class room, that not all the kids in her class could these, but there are also kids in her class who were reading on their own when we got there.

I think someone posted a list of what kids should know for kinder a while back- either Nancy or Amanda maybe?

    Hope this helps.

  • I sent R to pre-school 5 days a week. It was also all day long daycare too, but I specifically chose a preschool that met every day, not because i was worried about the academics, but because I knew that the structure of being told when he was allowed to do certain things and when he was required to do others would be difficult for him. Personally I wouldn't worry about the academic portion. Make sure your little one can take care of herself, get dressed & undressed, bathroom, lunch, follow instructions, ask questions, ask for help, etc.
  • I honestly would put her into 5 days a week, especially if you're planning on only doing 1 year of PS, as she'll be old enough to go to kindergarten the following year and I think that will be a major shock to her being put into full day K only after only having one year of PS.
  • My youngest 2 go to daycare part time but my oldest goes everyday because he is in the preschool there. Its really up to you how they go. I was actually researching the things my son should know before he starts kindergarten. I put it on my blog for others moms. Its located at www.mommyspeaksouut.blogspot.com
