Snorkeling

Hi - On our cruise next month, I am wanting to go snorkeling.  We stop in Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Honduras, and Costa Maya.  I was thinking about snorkeling in Cozumel.  How's the snorkeling in Cozumel?  Should we snorkel in Cozumel or Grand Cayman?

Re: Snorkeling

  • Out of those places, we've snorkeled in Cozumel and Honduras.  In Cozumel, I rec going to Chankanaab Park, great place to snorkel or dive.  In Honduras (Roatan), go to the Maya Key, we snorkeled off the end of the pier there and it was incredible, a huge reef, best snorkeling we've ever experienced!

  • We have snorkeled in both Grand Cayman and Cozumel and both are amazing.  You really can't go wrong with either option.

I would base your decision on whether or not you would like to see the stingrays also in Grand Cayman.  Most of the snorkel tours there include a stop at stingray city where you can touch, play with, feed the rays.  It is a neat experience so I would recommend Grand Cayman for snorkeling.  But the fish and coral are equally nice in Cozumel.

  • There's more info in my blog post from our cruise in May, but here's a short bit of info.

Cozumel - we took a cab to the Money Bar and snorkeled for free.  Bought lunch and some drinks.  I wasn't all that impressed with the water clarity and amount of reefs.  I probably wouldn't snorkel in Cozumel again.

GC - walked to dive shop about a mile to the right of our pier and snorkeled there for free.  We rented a locker for our gear.  It was beautiful!  Would go back and probably dive there.

Next time we are in Roatan, you will find me with a snorkel and fins if not a tank and BCD.  We ziplined and did a beach break, but the whole island is surrounded by reefs.  We loved our time there, but my biggest regret is not snorkeling.

  • I'm a diver, so my perspective is different.  I've dived Cayman, Cozumel, and Roatan, and all 3 were great.  Roatan was probably the best single dive, but I spent a week diving 2-3 times in Cozumel and didn't run out of places.  You're really going to get a good trip in any location, so look at other trips you really want to do and snorkel in the place that doesn't have another option that appeals to you.

One suggestion for cozumel, you can take the ferry to Playa and then go snorkel in the cenotes.  They'll pick you up in Playa, and it's an amazing experience, even for me and my family of jaded divers (and it's easy enough for beginners).  It looks like the place we used 7 or 8 years ago, has added more adventure type stuff instead of just the snorkel or dive option, but someone has snorkel tours I'm assuming.

  • We went snorkeling in Cozumel and it was beautiful! The water was clear and warm. We didn't have a chance to snorkel in Grand Cayman because the weather was a little crazy. Have fun!
