Help me plan our first vacation!

H and I want to go on a spring break trip. We were thinking April 6-11 (Good Friday- Weds). 5 nights.

We want to go someplace very warm where we are guaranteed to have great weather (no rain, no hurricanes), on a beach, preferably all-inclusive so that we can drink as much as we want. Beer

Is it possible to find this for less than $1,000? This is our max budget, including airfare, flying out of Chicago.

Has anyone done this for less than $1,000?  Tell me your secrets!

Re: Help me plan our first vacation!

  • I don't have any great secrets Smile BUT I believe this is very possible to do if you start looking now- and book now- and wouldn't mind going to Mexico. The beach cities of Mexico are very safe and tourist friendly, and they have some great AI's. I know $1000 is your budget, however I am almost positive this is do-able for the $1200 or less range, if not your current budget anyway.

Check priceline... I always start my searches through them and build from there. Good luck!

  • Sorry but I don't think you will find any AI's in Mexico, the DR, Jamaica for $1000 for two people that includes flights from Chicago. If you do find something let us know but I think the cheapest you will find will be between $1600-$2000 for two people. From checking your dates, I think your best bet is to try Cancun or Playa Del Carmen. Don't forget you will need to pay for transportation to and from whatever airport to the hotel as well and many AI's will still expect tips.
  • Are you flexible with your dates at all?  A lot of people will be traveling for Easter/Spring Break around this time, so it may drive the prices up a bit.  There's also no way to guarantee you that you will have great weather.  But I would try Mexico (Cancun, probably), the DR or Jamaica, as these are the cheapest beach destinations in my experience.  If you watch Travel Zoo for a bit, you may be able to find a good deal.

  • Do you have passports yet?
  • I think there is no way you can do this for under $1000, even with a great deal.
  • This doesn't seem possible...

  • There are some things listed on cheap caribbean that are like $479 pp including flights for three nights. In the Bahamas.

That's the cheapest I can imagine, and it's a) not the right amount of time and b) flights from ORD may be more expensive as I'm not sure you can fly direct to Nassau.

Also, the dates she wants are probably blacked out since it's easter/spring break.

I think it's really unlikely. I'd cut back the number of nights or maybe go on a cheap 3 day cruise.

"We tend to be patronizing about the poor in a very specific sense, which is that we tend to think,
  • I think the only thing you will find in that price range is a 3-4 day cruise.  You are wanting to go during a high traffic travel time.  Prices jump way higher during Spring Break.  If you could change your dates a bit, you may be able to find lower prices.  I think it may still be tough for you to do what you are wanting for $1k or less.
