Nashville, TN

DH and I want to go on a long weekend trip to celebrate some big spring 2012 events, and we settled on Nashville because it's a reasonable drive from where we are in Greenville and neither of us has been before.

We are thinking of the last weekend in April because DH wants to see Prairie Home Companion at Ryman.  I know that while we're there I want to see the Grand Ole Opry and downtown Nashville, but right now I'm just in the beginning stages of researching.  Can anyone recommend things to do, restaurants, hotels, etc.?

Thanks in advance for anything you can help me with :)

Re: Nashville, TN

  • My sister went to college in TN and I miss it.

We went down to Printers Alley alot and saw some really good musicians.

If your into hiking then I would go to Frozen Head Park or Ruby Falls Park.

Vanderbilt area is fun to walk around .

    Have fun!

  • We really enjoyed the Country Music Hall of Fame.

The last time we went we stayed at the Doubletree downtown which we got thru Priceline for less than $100/night.

  • I'm pretty sure that the Country Music Marathon is the last weekend in April.  You might want to decide whether you want to deal with that.  It adds a lot of things to do, but it also adds some challenges with traffic and crowds.  I love Nashville in the spring.  There are tons of great bars and restaurants downtown.  Demo's is a particular favorite of ours, but I really don't think you can go wrong with most of the places downtown.

West End around Centennial Park is a nice area with lots of great restaurants as well.  The Parthenon  is really something to see from the outside.  The tour is okay, but not something that's ever been high on my priority list.  I hope this helps.   Have a great trip!

  • We have stayed at the Loews at Vandy and Hotel Indigo (both in West End) and the Doubletree downtown. There's also a Hotel Indigo downtown. The West End is a short cab ride to downtown, the DoubleTree and Hotel Indigo are walking distance to downtown.

The Ryman and CMHOF are in the downtown areas, we did the Ryman backstage tour but didn't make it to the Hall of Fame. We also did the backstage tour at the Grand Old Opry and walked around Opryland hotel for a few hours (it was really neat, DH was so not happy with me when I said we were going to a hotel to walk around for a while but he really enjoyed it). The Opry and Opryland are about 20-30 minute drive from downtown area. You are also pretty close to Franklin, which was the site of a major battle in the Civil War. Haven't done this either but it looks fun:

We've eaten at Noshville a few times (breakfast place in West End), Demos (I liked it, DH wasn't crazy about it- it's downtown), the BBQ place next close to Tootsies and Legends (Sam's or Jack's?? it was good), we've also been to Puckett's Grocery a few times and liked it (it's downtown, near the Ryman).

The Loveless Cafe is pretty famous too, but we haven't made it there yet.  We went to Merchants and they were really snobby to us (we'd just come from the UGA/Vandy game) almost like we couldn't afford to eat there.

Nightlife- we love Tootsies and Legends Corner (right next door to each other). There is live music just about in all the bars on Broadway. In Printers Alley, Lonnie's is a karaoke place, lots of fun there too. The Bridgestone Arena is right there also, you should check and see if any shows going on at that time when you decide to go.

  • Thanks for the suggestions!  I thought about the 1/2 marathon after I posted this, and it is on the 28th.  I know DH really wants to see Prairie Home Companion, so I think we might just make it work (and maybe I'll run the race since we'll be there!).

  • I love Nashville!  I've only been twice but totally fell in love.  Can't wait to go back.

We basically hung around downtown where Hard Rock is located and visited all the bars, shops, attractions.

The mall area is nice. I want to go back and do the stuff you mentioned like Ryman etc.

  • A rec here for Loveless Cafe. It's at the northern end of Natchez Trace Parkway which is also nice scenery. For antiquing I recommend Franklin. There is also Civil War stuff (plantation tours and battlefields) in Franklin and Murfreesboro.
  • I recommend Hutton Hotel, they have the best service

For restaurants, I would recommend The Loveless Cafe and Fido for breakfasts.  The meals we had at Hutton were pretty good too.  Otherwise, we didn't have too many other great meals.

We saw a show at The Grand Ole Opry (loved!), took the General Jackson Showboat dinner cruise (show was good, food was terrible), Country Music Hall of Fame (just ok), listened to live music at a few bars (fun!), went to Bell Meade Plantation and Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Art Museum (both were interesting).  It rained our entire trip, so we didn't get to do much outdoors.
