CRAZY sports parents!!

I talk about this a lot with my family after I witness it, but can't sports just be fun for kids? I get being competitive and wanting your kid to win, but some people go over the top! I am so concerned about this because of what happened to my 13yo nephew today. I admit, he is a phenominal wrestler. They take him all over the US to wrestle kids and he has to now because he is on Team Iowa. My sister and BIL don't have a competitive bone in their body, so all of what Max has learned and how he is pushing himself is his own doing. I know that parents have their kids cut weight to get out of his weight class, which stinks, and their are the parents who have their kids gain weight so they can face him. I have heard parents screaming, throwing things and doing all sorts of stuff I do not think should be done in sports, especially at a kids level. Today took the cake...my nephew was offered money by a parent to not pin his son. My nephew of course did not accept the money and not only won, but pinned this man's son. My nephew gets along great with this kid and he's a nice kid, but what parent does that?! I have been so incredibly disturbed by this all day. I just wanted to throw that out there...you can want your kids to be great, but please don't go crazy :D

Re: CRAZY sports parents!!

  • W-O-W. Good grief. This concerns me as well. DH was good at about any sport he tried. Me -not so much. Whether my kids are good or not want them to have some fun and gain some life skills in the process. I hate the thought of some over the top parent ruining it for my kids, particularly if they take after their mom.

  • From my experiance, wrestling parents take the cake, given, not all. But there is a few that are INSANE when it comes to wrestling!

    And good for your newphew!

  • Wow that does take the cake!  Who does that?  I would think that could get him in some trouble.  Further more nice way to have some confidence in your own son to pay the other kid to lose!

  • How much money?...Joking!

That's insane. I was talking to my neighbor that has a 7-year old and apparently a father has to be asked to leave a flag-football game where they do NOT keep score because he was yelling at the parent volunteer coaches for taking his son out of the game (all kids are on a rotation and play equal amounts) when it was his turn to sit.   I'm a pretty competitive person, but seriously...
