Update: We have a diagnosis and a plan (long)

So we finally got a doctor to solve the mystery that is my father. (They said he is a complicated case) It is a long process, but they are hopeful they can get it squared away. He has something called tracheomalacia. It is when the normal cartilage in the wall of the windpipe begins to break down. So when my dad exhales, the flap collapses and blocks the trachea. Treatment starts with a CPap machine, which is commonly used for sleep apnea. He also has that and has been in the process of getting a machine. So that is step one in his recovery.

Since his is so severe they need to put a stent in his trachea. He already has two in his arteries, so what is one more right? Kidding aside, it is a tiny 'tube' type thing that they put to open the airways. It is a fairly small procedure done under anesthesia and is considered day surgery. Once they evaluate that it is working, they take the stent out (it can't stay in too long or it becomes infected). So they then proceed to do the corrective surgery. There are two options. 1. put a mesh like piece in there to hold it open or 2. cut the cartilage and sew it back properly. This is a more invasive surgery and will require a hospital stay. The surgeon he has will determine which type he needs. Hopefully that solves the problem.

The more complicated part is that my father isn't strong enough to handle the surgery. He also has some adema on his vocal chords that needs to heal on top of the effects of the pneumonia he had. They are discharging him from the hospital tomorrow with a follow up appointment with this pulmonary doctor for next week to start to take the next steps. Hopefully he can avoid any relapses and get stronger soon. They will keep evaluating him to see when he can withstand the surgeries.

It is all very nerve wracking knowing this can all happen again, but hopefully he is headed in the right direction. He has a long road ahead of him, but he will get there eventually.

Thank you all for your support and T&P. It means a lot to me. XOXO
