WWYD - Hot tubs and kids

Our new house has a hot tub.  It is almost completely enclosed on our deck and we will be finishing the enclosure and placing a lock on the gate.  Does anyone else have a hot tub and young children?  What are your rules?  I am all for making the thing adults only, but my husband wants to let his nieces and nephews use it.  I have told Jack that he can not touch the hot tub.  It is too hot and he will get ouchies.  If he sees his cousins in it that will be completely shot.  What do you ladies think?

Re: WWYD - Hot tubs and kids

  • How old are the nieces and nephews?

I think if you keep it a safe temp, it would be okay with really close supervision. But, if you plan on keeping it a "normal" hot tub temp, then I would say no kids. Or, maybe no kids under a certain age.

  • We have a hot tub and have never had any issues with our kids.  The cover has a lock and is tough to open so I know they could never get into it on their own.  I've never been worried about that.  Our kids know that our hot tub is mostly for mom and dad, but we have let them get in it twice before.  They love it!  It's gotten to the point that they don't even notice it anymore and don't really even ask to get in it.  We only ever get in it when they are in bed.

  • It would be empty until the kids were older.

  • We have a lock on ours and it is "kid free." It is really a non-issue. They know it is there but that it is off limits until they are 10. :)

  • Ours is off limits, too. Brayden has never really asked to go in it. He used to it being there and doesn't really notice it anymore. I'd turn the temp down for the kids if we were out there with them, but really we only ever go in it when they're in bed.

  • We have latches on the cover, so the kids wouldn't be able to open it.  I think K has been in it once, but just sitting on the edge.  She never asks to go in there.  It's a nonissue for us.  I have no qualms about my neice and DD using it, but they cannot get in there without help from us regardless, even my 9 year old neice can't open the latches.
