Tell me about European Cruises....

Looking into a Eurpoean cruise in 2013.  We're close to platinum on carnival so we'd rather sail with them.  Which port did you leave from?  Did you love the cruise?  We like the idea of visiting a bunch of places instead of just one city.  Tell me all about your cruise.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Tell me about European Cruises....

  • dh and i took a 12 night on the splendor in sept/oct of 2008 and we had a great time. we left from civitavecchia (rome's port) after spending 3 nights in rome first, went to naples, dubrovnik, venice (overnight), messina, barcelona and livorno (florence/pisa's port). we were also to stop in cannes but the seas were rough that day so we could't.

all in all it was  agreat time. we had a nice balcony room and the others who cruised with us (all with inside or oceanview rooms) were on our  balcony pretty much every night for happy hour.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • We did a European Cruise for our Honeymoon and we loved it!  Ours was on Princess, so I can't speak for what it would be like on Carnival, but I'm sure pretty similar!  Ours was a repositioning cruise, so we left from Copenhagen (they were finishing up their time in the Baltic) and we ended in Rome (they were beginning their time in the Greek Isles).  I loved seeing a bunch of different countries (we had 11 ports in 14 days), but you are sorta rushed in some places and you feel like you dont get to have the time and experience that you're looking for, so it's sorta more of a preview of the cities.  I would definitely do it again, in fact we were considering it but Alaksa won this year!

  • We just did one last Sept we loved it! We left from Barcelona after spending a day there, ours was 7 days long and I feel  like we saw so much and know where we want to go back and spend some more time. I've never been on Carnival so I don't know how their cruises are but seriously the cruise is so port intensive I really don't think it matters. The days are long at the ports because you are trying to fit in a lot in a little amount of time but it was so nice to come back to the ship after the long days and relax while moving on to the next stop.
  • Which part of Europe did you have in mind? Greek Isles, Western Mediterranean, Canary Islands, British Isles, Norwegian coast, Baltics, the Arctic, the Black Sea, Iceland & Greenland?

If you're determined to stick with Carnival, they really only have two choices this year. Only one of their ships (Carnival Breeze) is based in Europe, and it does either 12-night roundtrips from Barcelona or one-way sailings between Barcelona and Venice. I wouldn't be surprised if 2013 is similar, because they've drastically scaled back their European sailings over the last few years.

Of the five cruises I've done in Europe, the Baltics were my favorite for culture and city sightseeing, and the Norwegian coast was my favorite for nature and scenery. For the Baltics, we left from Oslo, because it was the cheapest option, and it was convenient. For the Norwegian coast, we sailed from Southampton, which was fairly simple and gave us the option to spend a few days pre- and post-cruise exploring London.

  • i guess im the only one who didnt enjoy our Mediterranean cruise.  it was WAY too rushed for me.  you have to get up so early to get off and get the most out of the day and then when you get back you are so tired you dont even feel like going to the dining room (we got room service most nights).  initially my family (7 people total) were planning on just going to italy but we realized quickly booking a cruise would be easier with that many people.  and now i wish we took the time to plan a trip to just Italy.  i wanted to spend more time on the Amalfi coast and i cant wait to go back to Florence!

You're not the only one. I vastly prefer cruising other parts of Europe over the Mediterranean, because some of those ports are so rushed. My Med cruise was among my least-favorite European cruises, but my cruise along the Norwegian coast was one of my favorite cruises ever.
