Website for house utilities?

Is there a place that will tell you the average cost of utilities for a specific house?

Re: Website for house utilities?

  • Ask your realtor to get the info from the seller's agent.

Thanks.  We're not quite ready to buy, probably sometime next year.  If we went to open houses do you think they'd have the info there?  I wanted to get an idea of numbers for budget purposes.

They might have it with them. When you list a house (at least in my area) one of the sheets that the seller has to fill out is monthly utility costs. It kinda looks like this...

January  electric $  water $  sewer $  etc...
February  electric $  water $  sewer $  etc...
March  electric $  water $  sewer $  etc...

  • Great, thank you!

If they dont have it with them, just ask to have it emailed to you.  When I sent my agent our info, I just averaged each utility out myself and sent her the final totals.

  • I agree with pp to request it from the seller's agent - through your agent if you have one. If you do not have one and they do not have it at the open house, you could call the utility companies directly. I did this and just told them it was listed for sale and you were interested in the information because you want to purchase the home. They may not give you exact #'s but they may give an average.

But there is not a website to find the info, other than the utilitie's website, but I doubt they would let you into a specific house's info without being the owner and signing up for an account (like bill pay).

This is a good idea if the numbers are not available at the open house.  Thank you!

  • Calling the utility companies is the best way since no one really wants to say they have an astronomical bill.  I'd try asking for a high, low, and average.

If not, ask the other agent/seller, I would like to hope that most people are pretty honest.

  • I actually called the utility company (PECO) and told them I was looking at buying a house and wanted to know what the average utility bill was. They asked the address and gave me the 12 month average. It was pretty easy.
