mid West/West by car

Has anyone taken a trip through the western states by car? We had tentatively spoken  with a gentleman at AAA about doing this. He suggested flying into Vegas and renting a car there and then doing a circular route flying back out of Vegas at the end.

If you have done this or something similar, where did you go or suggest we go?  Did you stay in hotels/B&B or camp? What kind of budget did you have and did you feel that was enough.

It will be me, DH, DS (3yrs),DD (1yr), and Grandma (73yr). DS is very curious and will enjoy pretty much anything we do. DD, obviously no idea how she'll be yet since she isn't born yet. Gma, is feisty and did many things out that way when she was in her teens and 20s.She however does have emphysema from years of smoking. She can walk around, but has problems with lots of hills and rough terrain do to it being hard to catch her breath. As of right now, she has not been put on oxygen.

What kind of itinerary would you recommend if you were planning this vacation? It will 7-10 days.

TIA

I should add that I'm taking Arizona and New Mexico out of the plans because we want to go back to those states and spend a full vacation there. Also, we don't plan on CA either.  Oregon and Washington will be in our plans when we do Alaska. The only thing we know for sure we want to hit is Mt. Rushmore.

Re: mid West/West by car

  • Vegas and Mt Rushmore are at LEAST a 2 day drive apart, and a boring 2 days with not a whole lot to see or do. You'd be better off flying into Salt Lake City or Denver, and even then you will have a decent drive. You could explore Yellowstone as well as the Badlands. But with two little kids, I would imagine 16 hours in a car (well over 1000 miles) would not be so enjoyable.
  • If you don't want to see AZ, NM, or CA, I wouldn't fly into Vegas. Like PP said, fly into somewhere more norther like Denver. Or start on the west coast and drive east.

I was saying to Dh that Vegas didn't make a lot of sense to me.

We wouldn't be driving the 16 hours straight. We'd stop often to let them run around even if it meant just pulling off to the side of the road and checking out the plant or animal life nearby.
