cool or warm air humidifier?

I have a Vick's cool mist humidifier for the baby's room and I freakin hate it. It gets moldy and gross and it's very hard to clean.

Does anyone have one they can recommend? Also, should I be using cool or warm air? Everyone said when she was sick to bring her in to the shower for the steam and I think it helped. The cool air mist also seems to be making her room cold.

Help!

Re: cool or warm air humidifier?

  • My doc always says cold because of bacteria growth. I guess it makes sense but the thing is moist anyways? Bacteria thrives in warmer environments....so i guess that is why. We have a germ guardian which I bought at Bed Bath & Beyond... It was pricey but well worth it as it never gets moldy. I think after coupon it was around 120. My husband and son both have constant respitory issues/colds.... So it was worth it for us.
  • One more thing! When my son was sick I bought California babies cold/flu aromatherapy bubble bath and that was a huuuuge help! It helped with his nose congestion a ton and it smells nice.
  • we have this one http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=161317&catid=185742&aid=338666&aparam=161317
i really like it because there is no filter and it is super easy to clean.  i will admit to not cleaning it as often as i should and no mold so far.  a little vinegar rinse is all i have needed to do for some hard water-type calcification on it.
we do cool mist at night with the addition of a onesie under the jammies because it does get chilly.  sometimes i add socks too.  and we do vaporub on the feet.  for the steam showers, we use some peppermint oil or some of the vapor bath too.  it just gives it a little added something and helps clear ds out even better.  to make sure we are getting all of the steam we can, i rolled up towels under the doors to trap it all in.
hope little l feels better soon!

We have this one too, only the frog.  I think they sell them at BBB.  No mold so far in a year and a half of daily use.  I've had the adult version in our room for years and still no mold.  Just a bit of hard water buildup.  It doesn't seem to make our room colder.  The air coming out is room temperature.  I love it.

  • We run the crane's elephant cool mist nightly for almost a year. No filter no mold. I add euclyotus drops when he is sick and also rub it on his feet. We too use the Cali baby cold and flu bubble bath.
  • Ok thanks. I think they have that at Target. I going to run and pick it up today.

The Vick's one I have is this one:  http://www.amazon.com/Vicks-Gallon-Cool-Mist-Humidifier/dp/B001FWXKTK/ref=sr_1_16?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1326120101&sr=1-16 .

I registered for it not knowing much about them and it's horrendous. It needs to be cleaned every day. I hate it.

  • We had two Vicks machines prior both were so freaking loud.
  • Yeah, you will not know what to do with the silence we this one.  It basically makes no noise.
  • thanks for posting this.  We have a Vicks (not the one you have) and it leaks all.the.time.  I put a sheet pan/cookie sheet to catch the water but it's such a pain whenever we use it. I'm ready to toss it and get a new one.

For the ladies who have the Crane ones- have you ever had a problem with them leaking??

  • The Vick's one that I have is loud but I think it works as white noise. It never seemed to bother her. Also, it actually covered up some of the noise in the house that wakes her up from time to time.

  • This one doesn't have any white noise associated with it.  We have a white noise machine in Emma's room.  We have this one: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3951396&prodFindSrc=search  We also use the light as a bit of a nightlight.  If she's used to the noise, you might want to think of something similar.

We have two of the crane ones and they've never leaked.  You only have to be careful not to turn them up too high or sometimes it's damp around the machine.  I really never go above about medium, but we also have low ceilings in our bedrooms.

  • I have the Crane's frog humidifier and it leaked all over the dresser one night when we were using it.  It doesn't get many complaints though so maybe we got a dud?  I only used it once when he was sick but it didn't seem to be doing anything so it rarely gets pulled out.

  • Thanks for posting this.  I have a vick's cool mist humidifier also ( not the same one) and I am constantly changing the filter or it'll get moldy.  I hate it.

Hope your daughter feels better soon.

  • We have the elephant crane one and haven't had any issues. We had some mold build-up but that was after months of using it at the highest power. It's not too bad to clean.

Re: leaking...sometimes I spill a little when I'm refilling it but it's my fault, not the humidifier.

  • I just saw the Elephant and Frog at the Target near me, so they def should have them.

I recently bought a CVS brand one for 40 bucks and returned it.  It leaked everywhere.  The heat in our house is so dry.  I guess that's why the prior owners sprung for a humidifier for the boiler, which is broken and antiquated :(  Would have been nice if we could have gotten that humidifier to work.

Stupid question- could adults use the animal Crane humidifiers?  I have seen a lot of you rave about them.

Once we get back to having multiple rooms I'm getting another animal for our room. Whatever.

  • Coming from the same girl whose house looked like a Charle Brown Christmas for the past month, I have no shame in rocking an elephant in my bedroom.  Bless DH's heart!

  • A little peroxide will help with mold. Just be sure to google first, so you know the exact ratios of water to peroxide to add.
  • We have this one:

I have had no issues with mold, but I've only been using it for about two months. It does hum, but I like that it doubles as white noise.

  • My pedi always said cool air.  We have a VIcks one and didn't have a problem with mold, but we didn't need to use it that much.

    Hope she feels better!

Update! I bought the cute elephant at Target yesterday. It was $37.99. Hooked it up with no problems and I already love it. It's quiet and shoots out a nice mist.

Unfortunately it did not lull my daughter into sttn as she was up twice (shoot me now, please) but I'm sure that will happen again when she's feeling better.

    Thanks for all the info.

  • This is good to know as I have a Vick's and it sounds like a motor boat.

Question: why do some of you use it with your babies every night?  I have only pulled mine out twice to help with congestion. Just curious.

when it gets cold out and our heat is on more often, ds seems to get more stuffy.  if i know the heat is going to be on all night i will turn on the humidifier as a precaution to the stuffiness and caked on boogers.  i get stuffy when the heat is on a lot too so i can usually tell when we need to turn the humidifier on.  we have forced air heat and i wish we had radiators sometimes.

  • Ah. Thanks. We have radiator heat and I haven't noticed stuffiness with him. Appreciate it.

My kid is sick right now but I used it a lot when she was first born b/c our house gets so dry from the heat. Supposedly humidifiers can help prevent colds b/c they keep the nasal passages from getting dry and cracked.

  • I feel like our upstairs is always dry, so we use it to help with that.  I think if you have radiators, it's not really needed every night.

I was curious about this too.  I've only needed it/ used it when the kiddos are sick.  Interesting to see why others use it all the time.

Hunter is congested every single morning, unless we use it :(
