Madrid...suggestions?

My friend and I are traveling to Ireland and Spain next week for a much needed girls trip!  We'll be spending the second half of our vacation in Madrid with 5 days to explore the city. The only concrete plans we have so far are to visit the Museo del Prado and the Royal Palace. We are also considering a day trip via train to Segovia or Toledo.

Does anyone have any "must see" attractions we should add to our list? We both enjoy art, history, shopping and "off the beaten path" activities.

We are looking forward to the food, wine, and night life in Madrid as well so any suggestions for restaurants and night clubs would be appreciated!

I really enjoyed the Reina Sofia and picnicking in El Retiro, but it's too cold for that now.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • DH and I enjoyed the Reina Sofia more than the Prado. We enjoyed getting some drinks and tapas at Mercado de San Miguel near Plaza Mayor as well. Museo del Jamon is a must check out place for delicious jamon. It's very busy and the service is a tad rude at times, but it was a fun place to pop into for some jamon and beer. We also checked out some of the tapas places in the Rick Steves book, but without the book in front of me, I can't think of the names.

I would definitely do a day trip to Toledo. We loved walking around the city and the cathedral is amazing.

We had a good meal at a place in the Plaza Santa Ana...it was on the corner near the Room Mate Hotel and across the plaza from the ME hotel. If we had time we were going to check out the Midnight Rose (I am pretty sure that was the name) lounge at the ME hotel. It's a Randy Gerber (husband of Cindy Crawford) place.

  • Oops, totally missed that post...thanks for the link!

The Reina Sofia will be added to the list. I'm definitely interested in the Picasso and Dali collections.

Yea unfortunately it's not picnicking weather there at the moment. However, the highs are showing in the 50s for next week which will be great compared to the near freezing temps here in the North East! Smile

  • I'm another fan of Reina Sofia over Prado.  I also second the Mercado de San Miguel--you can get a glass of wine, sherry, etc and enjoy oysters, cheeses and more.  It's a nice place to spend as long or as little time and money as you want.

For side trips, I love Segovia but I studied there for a summer so I'm bias.  My friend who spent a semester in Toledo would say to pick that.  Segovia does have the aqueduct and Alcazar--two must sees IMO.

I also LOVED Segovia! Toledo was nice, but that aqueduct in Segovia was awesome!

I went to Spain several years ago with my ex-husband and have detailed entries in my old travel blogs on Madrid, Segovia, and Toledo: http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/Wanderlust-Travelers/Trips/2171
