I'm Stressed....

So I had a doctor's appointment on Friday.  Thanks to Christmas cookies I have now gained a total of 34 pounds  Indifferent  Doctor says I shouldn't gain anymore, which I agree. Everything else checks out healthy:  my blood pressure is still normal and blood tests from glucose drink came back really good (even the nurse who is pg said she wished hers were that good).  I still walk with the dogs 2-3 times a day (for a total of almost 2 hours).  But I'm starting to stress out over the weight gain and over analyze EVERYTHING I put in my mouth and at times not eating when I'm hungry so I don't gain anymore weight.

Someone talk me down from my ledge....

Re: I'm Stressed....

  • First, stop stressing about it! My sister told me the other day that she gained 40 lbs with her first, and she was back to normal in no time! She was about the same size as you were when she got pregnant, too. It sounds like you are still very healthy and active! Your two hours/day of activity puts me to SHAME!

You need to keep eating, but instead of overanalyzing everything, just only keep healthy snacks around. Oh, and my go-to product is 10-calorie cup Jell-o. Awesome for "mindless" eating! They are only 10 calories each and still pretty tasty. Even if you eat thee, that is 30 calories and no sugar. Also, keep things like string cheese or other high protein snacks around, because those keep you fuller longer.

Come down of the ledge. You will bounce back into shape after it is all said and done! : ) From all the pictures you have shared with us, not ONCE did I think you looked like you pregnant anywhere except your belly!

    Hugs!!!!

  • I gained at least 5 lbs over the holidays and I have no excuse Crying

    haha

Please don't stress, as long as your numbers came out great, then you are healthy.  Like Danie said, keep go-to snacks around and stay active.  And I agree, you looked great in your recent bump picture.  Relax, it'll be fine.  You only have a couple of more months anyway :)  OMG!

  • I agree with Danie. Everything is going to bounch back perfectly well.

Not eating when your hungry is not good, and probably not good for baby! Christmas will do that to anyone, it was just timing. Just eat healthy fruits and veggies and all that. Or eat littler amounts when you are eating throughout the day.

Everything else looks great and healthy and you should be proud that you are doing just a good job of taking care of baby!

Do NOT beat yourself up over putting on a few pounds. You are awesome and deserve to not be stressed for the duration.

  • Don't starve the baby!

Seriously though, I know I eat pretty much whatever sounds good at the moment because often the healthy stuff turns my stomach. It sucks, but I would rather eat something that will stay down and sit well than risk being sick or feeling queasy for hours. I'm impressed that you walk the dogs so much still, I can barely walk around the mall without being in pain and needing to sit down!

I think we all have our things about pregnancy that stress us out and I really wouldn't worry about the number on the scale. I also don't really know how you're not to supposed to gain anymore weight when the baby still needs to put on about 5 pounds.

  • Stress won't help (though my saying so won't help either, I know)!  Danie is right; string cheese is a great way to get protein and feel somewhat filled up but not calorie-wise.  I drank a TON of milk when I was pregnant... went through a gallon every three days by the end.  Don't know if that helped curb my appetite (ETA: wasn't trying to, it was really about being hungry and needing something NOW), but it was at least a quick way to get some nutrition and something for my body to work on.  Maybe have a glass of milk when you think you're hungry, a glass (8oz) has more protein than an egg!  Or have some Kashi cereal, something with a lot of fiber in it.  Avoid juices; eat fruit instead (fiber is more satisfying).

You probably know all this anyway, but you can't stop eating, just eat healthy!  And a few more pounds won't kill you.  Are you going to breastfeed?  You'll likely lose a lot of weight quickly then.  Personally I seem to eat as much as I burn up, but I'm way older than you so my metabolism is s-----l-----o-----w.  As active as you are, I bet you'll be back to your pre-pregnancy weight before you can say boo!

    ((((HUGS)))) honey, you're almost there!

And they're right about this: enjoy this time of being able to focus solely on YOU... it's the last you'll get for a while. :D

ETA#2: Rebecka is totally right, and I forgot already how picky my body was... heh, my mom says she all she ate was Carvel ice cream and Chinese food because that's all she could keep down -- sick all 9 months -- and heh, I turned out okay (I think, lol)!

Keep eating, you've at least gotta eat for one, Baby Schmel!

  •  I understand what you are feeling, trust me.  I was pregnant over the holidays too.  BUT PLEASE EAT WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY.  It is not healthy for the baby for you to skip meals.  And don't stress about the weight gain!  Stress isn't good for the baby either!  Relax mama!  Try to make some healthier choices when you are eating and just relax about it.  The MOST important thing is that the baby is getting all the nutrients it needs, not that you aren't hitting your target weight gain.   I gained 50lbs so I totally understand the shock of seeing the weight just climb and climb.  Go to the store and get some healthy food, indulge in some cravings less often (bc comeone, if the baby wants icecream the baby should get icecream ;) ) and just go with the flow!  You are fine!!!!!

  • I'm going to ditto what everyone else said. But please, please eat when you are hungry! You don't want to starve baby shmel and end up passing out or something b/c you are hungry. You are active and everything else looks great, so I wouldn't worry yourself!

  • PLEASE eat! Just make healthy choices (I should be taking my own advice BTW). If you are hungry keep around some almonds or carrots or pita and hummus or something that is filling (with good fats) and healthy with vitamins! Also keep in mind if you can't eat anything but mac and cheese because thats all you can keep down then ignore my advice. If you are keeping active don't stress yourself out!! Tons of hugs!!!
  • wow Mel are you my reflection out there?  i woke up today feeling like 20lbs of sh*t in a 5lb bag.  want to feel better?  i've already gained 30lbs and i'm only 23 weeks.  YEAH, just barely over half way point.  so i totally feel your  pain and i've also realized i need to STOP with the junk.  my lunch today was a salad and TONS of fruit.

being active is huge and it seems like you have that covered!  i've been told the stories of 40, 50, even 60lbs gained at birth!  yowza!   but all say they've lost most or all of it in due time.  not looking forward to meeting w/ my trainer today.  he's going to flip his sh*t when he sees me as we haven't worked out in a week and a half and my legs look like orange peels.  asked Sami if my legs looked lumpy this weekend - and his ballsy reply: "yes - and your knees look fat again." REALLY?!?!  i told him i was divorcing him.

sigh, i feel your pain, may not be much encouragement - but apparently, it happens, esp around holiday season and winter (thank the bulky sweaters and vests that making covering up soooo easy!).  i'm looking at it as, ok - enough, i'm going to try my hardest not to gain as quickly as i have been by cutting the junk out (hi - swiss cake rolls with a dab of chocolate frosting?  never done that in MY LIFE before last week...), going to keep working out, and be hell bent on dropping it come this summer.

you look great Mel and listen to the other ladies as well - lots of protein to help keep you full and lots of healthy snacks!  you rock and i'm totally positive you are making the cutest lil baby in there!!!

  • It's good to analyze exactly what you are putting in your body (pg or not), just make sure you get enough calories and eat things that agree with your body. Don't stress because it sounds like you are already doing a fantastic job and acing all of the tests and you look gorgeous in your bump pics, so keep doing what you are doing! And we'll be here for you when you are working to burn off those pounds afterwards!

First, I was almost crying laughing at your and Sami's conversation. My legs looked crap only a few weeks in. I had problems with cellulite when I was a size 6 in high school, so it is just my body...

Second, I told Jeff he is no longer allowed to buy the Strawberry Swiss Rolls. He told me to just stop eating them. I asked him if he would have crack to a crackhead and tell him not to smoke (or inhale or inject or whatever the hell they do with it)? Seriously!

  • I'm going to agree with everyone else!! As long as your are eating healthy well balanced meals and you are getting out and exercising there isn't much you can do right now to control your weight, so just go with it. And trust me I can completely relate to freaking out about the scale number going up. I have my next apt. next week and I don't even want to see where I'm at because I know it will just put me in a bad mood. But for the next few months we just have to deal and then get our butts in gear after the baby is here! Also I have heard some people just natually gain more weight, it is how their bodies deal with pregnancy and there is nothing you can do but embrace it.

  • Thanks for all the advice and tips ladies!  I usually eat pretty healthy, homemade granola cereal and toast and PB for breakfast, a banana for mid-morning snack, leftovers for lunch, an apple/carrots for afternoon snack, and salad, homemade casserole dish (or whatever we are having), and a little piece of sweet for supper.  I'm hoping my body will just balance itself out after the Christmas cookie binge.

@Kiki:  I do plan to breastfeed and I know that will help a lot!

@Holly:  Shame on Sami for saying that!!  Is your weight gain gradual or does it go in spurts?  Mine seems to spurt, i.e. I lost a few pounds after first doctors visit, then gained 15, gained a few the last time, and now gained 17 more.  So weird!

  • Oh Mel - just to reiterate what all the girls have said - try not to stress about it!  I gained the majority of my weight in the first trimester and I remember feeling really crappy as the numbers on the scale went higher and higher.  What you are eating sounds perfect. Keep doing what you're doing in regards to the exercise too!

Merritt was born two weeks ago tomorrow and I'm already only 10 pounds away from my pre-pregnancy weight.  As disconcerting as it is to see your weight increase, just know that it will come back off!

  • Please don't be so hard on yourself!  When it comes to pregnancy weight, I am of the belief that your body is doing exactly what it needs to for you and the baby.  Your weight gain really doesn't sound that bad, actually. Yes, healthier choices are always a good thing, but you need to make sure you take in enough food for your little boy.
