Learning to knit or crochet?

I decided that I thought it might be fun to learn to knit or crochet. I have browsed around online and haven't gotten a clear answer of one being easier/better to learn. Has anyone here taught themselves to knit or crochet? Any suggestions on where to begin?

I have been wondering this same thing myself. I know how to crochet (my grandmother taught me when I was little), but I would really love to learn to knit.

with the help of YouTube, I've thaught myself to Knit.

I find it nice and easy, very relaxing to watch TV and just let my mind wonder.

I learned to crochet as a little girl and have taught myself to knit. I think they are both easy enough but different in their own ways. I learn best visually and I found that a book that was given to me by my grandmother was the best way for me to learn to knit. There are tons of you tube videos to help you as well. Just take your time and be patient.

i took a DSM community ed course, and i found it frustrating -- there were a lot of seasoned knitters in the beginner class, and it felt fast-paced since i was a true beginner. You-Tube was where i learned best! KnittingHelp.com also has several tutorials. if you prefer books, the library has several how-to selections. i would suggest starting with a bigger needle (higher number).

I prefer knitting over crocheting. I can't keep tension, so my crochet work is always uneven. At least with knitting, the stitches stay on one needle at all times so I can only make them so tight. I also prefer the finished look of knitting over crocheting for most items.

I learned both as a kid, so not really a great help with where to start. My sister learned quickly from a "Learn to Knit" kit from Michael's. I would probably get some books from the library and then go to youtube to see things in action.

I agree with the pp to start with a larger needle to learn. I usually recommend people to get a set of 9s and not start out with 100% acrylic or cotton because they don't have a lot of give. I like Lion Wool-Ease (wool/acrylic blend).

Also, go join ravelry.com. It's like the nest for knitters.

Thanks everyone! I picked up a couple books at the library today after our music class. I am going to start reading and browsing there and then hit up youtube to find some how-to videos!
