Bora Bora hotels

I'm just getting started planning a trip to French Polynesia for May.  So far I've booked 4 nights at the Moorea Hilton in an overwater bungalow.  I may add one more night there, then plan for 3-4 nights in Bora Bora.

I'm considering just going with the Hilton in Bora Bora as well, but wanted to get opinions on possibly the St. Regis or other hotel options.  If you've been to Bora Bora, where did you stay and did you love the hotel and OWB's there?

Also, what do you recommend for splitting up the days between Moorea and Bora Bora?  In searching around a little it seems like people found more to do in Moorea so I thought perhaps we'd go with 1-2 days longer there than Bora Bora.

Re: Bora Bora hotels

  • I have not been (yet :) ), but please post your review when you return! I always love hearing about Bora Bora trips! How fun!
  • I just stayed at the Hiltons on both islands.  We loved the Hilton Moorea.  But as for Bora Bora, I wouldn't recommend staying at the Hilton.  I don't have anything bad to say about the hotel BUT it is not on the main land and we were told that sometime soon they are going to start charging for the shuttle boat ride to Viatape.  Unless you plan on just staying at the hotel and not doing any excursions or checking out the town, then I think you should consider staying somewhere either on the mainland or somewhere that has a free shuttle.

We did 4 nights in each island and thought that was a good split.  In Moorea we left the hotel to go on an ATV tour, and in Bora Bora we went parasailing and went on a lagoon tour w/snorkeling.

I keep meaning to write up my review.  I'll hopefully be able to type it up in the next week or so.

  • I didn't think there was as much to do on Bora Bora, but we did dive there (as well as in Moorea) and I say that is a must-do. If you don't already have it, get your diver certification before you go...totally worth it!
  • I haven't been to Bora Bora yet, but my research has led me to believe that the Four Seasons, St. Regis and IC Thalasso are regarded as the "top tier" of hotels there.  The Hilton does well, but is maybe a touch less luxurious from what I've read.
  • When we were there 7 years ago, the St. Regis and Four Seasons weren't built yet, so we stayed at the Le Meridien and it was awesome. They're on their own motu and run water taxis to the mainland every 20 minutes all day and until 1 or so in the morning. The stay was incredible and there's even a turtle lagoon that you can snorkel in. Also, the onsite restaurant was really good (we ate there for lunch but went to the mainland most nights for dinner). It feels VERY secluded and we literally went the whole week without talking to anyone except the occasional waiter or concierge (part of that is b/c most of the guests are French or Japanese). I would def recommend it.

  • We stayed at the FS Bora Bora for our honeymoon in September (and the Sofitel in Moorea - highly recommend!).  It's gorgeous and the hotel is immaculate, but be prepared to pay... I think our four nights were $6,800 (and then our incidentals - food, transport from the airport to the hotel, etc. ran us an additional $1,600 for four days).  We had the mountain view bungalow - well worth it!  PM me if you want more details.
  • We're one of the few people on the board who actually preferred Bora Bora - we spent more time there than Moorea and I was glad we did!  Everything about it was just far more beautiful.

We stayed at the Sofitel Marara Beach and absolutely loved it.  We liked being on the main island so we didn't have to worry about ferries bringing us back and forth at their convenience and we loved being over really deep water in the OWBs.  The OWBs were HUGE there with a separate sunning deck and diving deck.

  • Thanks for all the info ladies!  It sounds like you really can't go wrong with a hotel choice in Bora Bora.  All of your feedback has been positive and there are so many great reviews on Tripadvisor.  I'm still not sure which hotel to go with yet but I'm confident we'll be happy with any of the recommendations.
