A few items of business.

First, I'm so bummed I missed the superlative voting! Fail on my part. But thanks for thinking I'm nice! You're all too sweet.

Second, a sad story. A few months ago, I found the perfect dress at Nordstrom for an upcoming semi-formal military function and waited patiently for it to go on sale. It finally did over the holidays and I was ecstatic as I put it in my online shopping cart. Then I looked for something for my baby, and by the time I clicked "checkout" 10 minutes later, it had sold out and disappeared from my cart. Subsequent phone calls to Nordstrom confirmed that it no longer exists in America.

Third, a request for fashion advice. I hope to find the original dress (seen here: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/xscape-ruffle-collar-stretch-satin-sheath-dress/3269030?origin=keywordsearch&resultback=446 in blue) on eBay, but ordered the same dress in different colors as backup just in case it doesn't come up. One is a dark navy, the other is a light/coppery brown, and I can't decide which one to keep. I like the navy slightly better, but worry that it will look too matchy with M's mess dress. But then I worry the brown won't coordinate well with the mess dress. And then I think neither is appropriate for spring, but whatever. Thoughts?

Re: A few items of business.

  • I agree with the seasonal thing. I feel like both of these colors are classic enough that they can fly in the spring, especially in a short style. Maybe I can convince M to do a fashion show with me and then upload the pictures. Haha, okay, not a chance of that one, so I'll have the internet help me. Here's the navy one (it's far less shimmery in person, thank goodness):

    Here is the brown:

And, just for reference, here is the one I hope pops up on eBay:

I really am torn between the two, and hope I can just get my first choice. But it seems silly to keep both as a backup so I need to make a decision and M is no help at all!

  • I think the navy will look amazing with the mess dress.  Just matchy enough without matching.  That make sense?!

I feel like the brown could be fun. You've never done a color like that before, right? I say do the brown.

Good point! I've never done brown and don't see myself picking a brown dress again (whereas, there could be another navy dress I'd love more in the future). I like your logic. Problem solved :)!

And, FTR, brown can totally be a spring color. It's all in the accessories. (Says the girl who had brown, soft pink and ivory as her May wedding colors.)

Oooh, okay. I can see that, too. Maybe my problem is unsolved haha. I'm so easily swayed when it comes to these things.

If it helps, this event will be at the Air Force Academy and will include my baby boy in a little black tux. I expect a gorgeous family picture in front of the chapel that will be hung in our home forever. It's so much easier to dress the men in that picture...

I'm now picturing the brown dress with pretty blush-colored heels. Tempting.

  • Brown 100%!

This just affirms my navy choice.  I think like colors will make a fabulous family pic, esp with that amazing back drop!

You know either way, you'll look stunning though, so its a win-win!  P.S.  That green dress your mom made was a.maz.ing.  Seriously.

  • Thanks, Fancy! And thanks everyone for your input!

I just tried the dresses on for Smiles via Skype and I we're 90% on the navy train. It looks better with my coloring and is more "me" at the end of the day. Plus, it's *just* different enough from the Mess Dress to work. FTR, it's a prettier color than the internet shows. I'll still hold out hope for the sapphire, but I think the navy is a good alternative.

  • I just bought a copper dress I'm pretty psyched about, partly because it's not a color you see often.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

Yes  Glad that you have a plan. I didn't say anything before because as much as I like the color Navy blue in clothes, I also have a special thing for "metallic" colors. (gold, silver, copper, etc.) I'm sure that your family will look great no matter what.

  • I think both are nice, but I really love the brown.  It looks like more of a metallic bronze-ish color, and I think that would look really sharp with the black.

  • We have very similar coloring so I say go with the blue. It will make your eyes pop and if you feel more confident in it, that will show in your pictures.
