US must sees

I am trying to plan a cross country trip with DH and my parents in June. We will be traveling by motorcycle and camping where possible, hotels where necessary. Our plan is to start off in Southern California and ride all the way to Montreal and back (not taking the same route of course).

I've driven across the US before but we did it in just 4 days and didn't really take the time to sight-see. This time we plan to take our time (around 3 weeks), and see as much as possible.

Is there anything you would list as must sees, places not to miss, or even places to avoid? Any other recommendations?

Re: US must sees

  • DH and I did a trip from Indiana --> Mt. Rushmore --> Yellowstone National Park --> Grand Teton National Park --> Indiana.  I loved Grand Teton, it was fabulous!  I'd stop by there, if it's on the way!

  • Don't have much to add (except that HWY 80 gets really boring through Nebraska and Wyoming) but I just wanted to say that this sounds like a fantastic trip! It's easy to forget to be tourists in our own countries, especially for all of us world travelers.

  • I did hear Grand Teton was beautiful, so I think we will try to make it there.

We plan to avoid highways as much as possible since we're looking to enjoy the ride rather than getting from A to B quickly (kind of how you're supposed to live life, right?...)

Also, anyone who is Canadian or has been to Canada, let me know if you have any must sees for eastern Canada (mostly Quebec) region as well. This will be my first time in Canada!

  • I think Utah is beautiful! You have to see Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon. The Grand Canyon is in that area, and although it was impressive, I would do the other two I listed first. If you go to Colorado, Colorado Springs has a lot to see. Garden of the Gods is where my parents take lots of visitors.

I would also look up some amazing restaurants. Occasionally we watch that Diners, Dives & Drive-Throughs (is that the name of it?) from the Food Network and we get so jealous about all the amazing food in the US (especially the South).

  • Wow, that's going to be amazing! We did a three week almost cross country trip about 10 years ago from Pittsburgh to Phoenix and back. We did the out going trip via Texas (do whatever you can to avoid west Texas. it goes on for days and days and is the most boring thing I've ever seen) and the return through Missouri. We stopped at the Grand Cayon, Petrified Forest, etc.

I loved Sedona, such a unique town. Pretty touristy but rightfully so, it's gorgeous. My mom moved to Santa Fe a couple years ago and the scenery around that part is so, so pretty.

I've always wanted to drive from California to Alaska, the coastline is so pretty.

We actually planned out trips around people - my mom was in Houston at the time, we had friends in Phoenix, family in the middle of nowhere in Missouri (which was super pretty too) and we just filled in the blanks along the way. It was my first time camping and well... I was not prepared. It gets so cold at night in the desert!

I would pick a few things you definitely want to see and go from there. I think the Grand Canyon is unmissible and I've always wanted to go to Yellowstone and Colorado. We were able to find campsites almost everywhere so I can't imagine that would be a problem.

  • I'm so jealous of your trip! I wouldn't want to miss the Canyon, otherwise you've gotten a lot of good suggestions. I've never done a long road trip like that, but H and I are hoping to do one when we return to the states as a big hoorah.

  • The Garden of the Gods in CO Springs is indeed extremely beautiful (my parents got married there). Also, if you're going in June I'd make sure to ride Trail Ridge Road in Colorado (you go up in Boulder, to Nederland and then you're very close already) it's the highest paved road in the US and you cross the continental divide 3 times or something. Dress warm though, last time I drove it was in May and despite the fact that the roads were completely clear, there was still lots of snow on the side of the road (as in, COLD!)

I've done the whole trip from Colorado Yellowstone, passing Custer's last stand, mt. rushmore (and far cooler, mt crazy horse), bear country USA, Sturgis, Wall SD, Deadwood etc. That was a very cool trip in itself, so I highly recommend doing at least some of that.

    Sounds awesome!

I've never been.. but I want to go to Old Quebec City. It's been my dream for years to go there to see it. Then again I always have wanted to go to Ottawa as well.

  • I highly recommend Arches National Park.  Also US-50 between Grand Junction and Pueblo, CO.  It was absolutely gorgeous scenery.
  • Thanks for all the great suggestions! We are extremely excited about the trip. It'll be our last big trip before we ttc (since it's a tad difficult to do this kind of traveling with a baby).

If anyone wants to join us on any part of the trip, we would be happy to have you along ;)

  • I want to see the redwoods, mt Rushmore, Yellowstone, grand canyon, Hoover dam, grand Tetons, pretty much any national park out west, maybe some historic baseball fields... Both dh and I want to drive the pacific coast highway, too. I would have to go to Seattle I think, too.. And maybe Portland to see the whole food scene out there.
