what's a fun birthday snack for school?

T has to bring a snack to school for his birthday. We're NOT allowed to do cupcakes.

Thoughts?

  • My favorite thing to bring (and it always went over really well) was fruit pizza!

lol, I think it's just a sugar cookie base with cream cheese and powdered sugar base... there are probably at least a few more ingredients... I'll try to find a good recipe Smile

    ETA:

Here's one exactly like I was thinking...

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup butter, softened
    • 3/4 cup white sugar
    • 1 egg
    • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
    • 1/2 cup white sugar
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
    2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and 3/4 cup sugar until smooth. Mix in egg. combine the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt; stir into the creamed mixture until just blended. Press dough into an ungreased pizza pan.
    3. Bake in preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool.
    4. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with 1/2 cup sugar and vanilla until light. Spread on cooled crust.
    5. Arrange desired fruit on top of filling, and chill.

  • Are you allowed to do other sweet stuff? Why do they specifically ban cupcakes, I wonder. I would do Rice Krispie treats because they are so easy!

Or how about some all natural fruit snacks, like Annies? Or Twisted Fruit (by Cliff) or fruit leathers? If you don't want to make something.

At DD's school we can't do food treats at all, so this year I sent rub-on tatoos for her to give out. Other kids have given out pencils, sticky hands, stickers, gomi erasers, bouncy balls, etc. Anything that you might put into a party goodie bag!

  • No cupcakes because the school says they are too messy and the kids end up just eating the frosting and not the cake.  (maybe I should just send a can of frosting and some spoons! just kidding)
I love doing fun things and making fun things for the kids birthdays. I always do a homemade cake. So far I've made zoo animal cupcakes, very hungry caterpillar cupcakes/cake, firetruck cake, farm cake.  This year I'm making a T-rex cake for Tyler and hopefully a lego cake for Ben's birthday.

Maybe I can figure out a fun way to incorporate dinos into the snack.

The volcanoes specifically... although, I'm not sure how I'd get brownies to bake like that.  ??  If I can figure that out, I was thinking of putting red chocolate melted over the tops?

  • I think you could make the brownies by baking them in a mini muffin tin, then turning the brownies upside down.

And, speaking as a kindergarten teacher, please bring something that's already individual (like cookies or those brownies).  While the fruit pizza looks awesome, it's a PITA to have to cut and serve while all the little ones are raring to eat the treat. ; )
