Downton Thoughts? (spoilers obviously)
It's going to be just as good as the first season!

Re: Downton Thoughts? (spoilers obviously)
I was surprised they skimmed over so many years, and yet not much appears to have changed. I honestly would have thought that they would be desperate to get Mary married off by that time -- given the time it was, and her age and the scandal.
Bates and Vera -- that poor guy. I have a feeling Lord Grantham and the rest of the household staff will not let that stand, but I'm interested to hear what happens.
I have to admit I was happy to see Thomas again. He and Mrs. O'Brien were both surprisingly sympathetic this episode.
Is that farmer that Lady Edith was crushing on actually married, or was that a disapproving sister or something?
Very sad that William is going off to war, and irritated with that flibbertigibbit Daisy. He deserves much better!
I'm glad Lady Sybil is continuing to be a strong character, and I think they set up the thing with the chauffeur pretty well. I still want her and Crowley to end up together, though.
So, no real deep thoughts, but I enjoyed it a lot!
It's historically accurate though that she isn't married. Most eligible men were in France fighting so many women who would have been "on the shelf" we're still waiting to marry without being viewed as harshly as before.
WWI changed lots societal norms including the NEED for a woman to marry. This generation of women largely ended up being unmarried because something like 90% of the men were dead so the pressure was slightly less to make a "good marriage" and we're well into the war. Sybil put it best when she said it seemed as if every boy she danced with was dead, that's probably pretty close to true.
and fortunately for Mary the war would've knocked her scandal out of people's minds before it became a. Full scandal which plays into the lack of pressure as compared to season 1 where they had to get her married before everyone knew and she'd be ruined and not able to get a husband short of a trip to Italy ;-)
At least that's how I'm interpreting her being in London at the start of the ep. If it was a major scandal she wold've been kept out of sight.
Yes, he's married. That's Mr. and Mrs. Drake.
I *think* (though I'm not entirely sure) that he's the one who had the fluid drained from around his heart in Season 1.
yeah I think it's the same guy but I'm not sure (maybe they re-cast the wife?)
I also find the passing of years on that show confusing

I thought the other notable change in characters was how mellow Mary has become. Losing her true love and being unwed for these years has really softened her and I'm liking her more. I thought that she handled herself admirably with Matthew's engagement and you KNOW they'll end up together!
