hiya...international newb here :)

Hi everyone --

I mostly hang out on thebump msg boards, but I just moved from NYC to London with my DH and 11-mo old DD.  We're probably going to be here for three years or so and we moved over here for my DH's job.  We lived in corporate housing for a few weeks and then moved into a house in SW London (amwallace...*waveshi*).

We're still in move-in mode, and we're going to Costa Rica next week for a wedding so won't get much more settled before then, but it is starting to sink in that we don't know anyone here.  I'm going to sign my DD up for Monkey Music and swim lessons, so hopefully that'll help, and I've joined an attachment parenting meetup group, but does anyone else have any suggestions for making new friends?  DH and I are 33 and have lived in NYC since we started college so neither of us have any experience moving to a new city, let alone a new country!  Any advice would be appreciated :)

Re: hiya...international newb here :)

  • Welcome!

I don't know much about London but there are quite a few people on this board living in that area so I'm sure you'll get lots of advice on that end. For making friends, all I can suggest is to get involved in as many outside activities as possible (clubs, gyms, etc.) which it sounds like what you're doing already.

Have fun in Costa Rica! We're in the "summer" months here so I'm sure you'll enjoy the warm weather. It's truly the best time to come here. Don't hesitate to message me if you need suggestions for places to eat/stay/visit.

  • Welcome to the board! I lived in Wimbledon with my dh for 3 years, my ds was born there. Are you close there? They used to do (and I think still do) a mom and baby movie at the theatre in Wimbledon, and I met people there. I also did NCT, highly recommend joining that, even if you aren't pregnant, they have events you can attend. We also did latino bambino and met people there too -http://www.latinobambino.co.uk/news.php

  • I don't have any advice for London, but "Hi" anyway, and welcome to the board!

I'm a 32-year-old American, living in Oslo with my Indian ex-husband. Someday I'll stop finding that funny and get around to moving out. Hopefully before my Brazilian boyfriend comes to visit!

  • You'll have to come to a gtg!  But I've made most of my friends through this board or through activities so meetup is great.

How old were the babies at the movie? I've heard people talking about it, but now that Georgia is walking I don't think we could go.

I think it was for under 2s? You might be surprised, she may not stay for the whole thing but she may like it for a little bit!

  • Welcome to the board! I'm always so jealous of the London ladies, they have meetups all the time. DH and I are Americans who have been living in Scotland for almost 6 years now. We're getting ready to apply for British citizenship this year.

Have fun on your travels, am so jealous of anyone who will see the sun soon, it feels like forever since I've been properly warm!

  • Hi and welcome! We're Americans in SW London, too. No kids yet, but any day now. =)

In terms of meeting people, you're on the right track. I also recommend NCT groups and we have GTGs pretty often in London. I've met people through this board, mine and H's work and church.

  • Hi and welcome! DH and I live in north London but I hope we'll have a chance to meet at some point.

One of my friends has been doing photo classes through GroupOn and has loved them for meeting people. You could also do a London pub walk through London Walks or similar, or take a class on a hobby. But it sounds like you're off to a great start with meetup!

  • Welcome to the board! I live in SW London too with a 13 month old.

In your other post you mentioned you were in Fulham. If you are near Parson's Green you might want to look into Cupcake Mum www.cupcakemum.com it's quite expensive (you have be be a member and pay monthly) but they have lots of classes to do with babies. I would imagine it would be a good place to meet other moms because you would all be attending the same classes, etc.

I also agree with looking into the NCT, they have regular meet-ups in Fulham Palace.

Thanks -- I am quite close to there and just saw something about Cupcake Mum the other day.  Maybe I'll shoot them an email and see what it's all about.  I think they have a gym, there, too, but I just joined David Lloyd.  I only took a 3-month contract, though, so I suppose once it runs out I could switch.

  • Hi and welcome! DH and I are Americans living in London. We have yet to make it to any of the gtg's on this board but hope to soon!
