  We are also getting a new one soon.  My iBook died about a year ago and I've been using a backup PC laptop since. I CANNOT wait to get back to a Mac!  You may already have some of the apps/widgets on your iPad, but I find Macs to be much more user friendly in terms of basic software and functions (stuff you would do on a computer but not on a tablet.) Also, I loved never having to worry about virus software on my iBook, and I loved that Apple's customer service is so accessible. I'm going with an iMac rather than a laptop this time around, though.

  Personally I would spring for a mac. It will last you longer and run smoother. I've owned almost every brand of pc. Dell (3), Sony, Toshiba, Hp (2) and when I switched to a Mac I knew I would never go back.

  Have you thought about getting a refurbished mac from the apple store? I think you student discount would work with that too.

  I LOVE (all caps necessary) my macbook.  I bought it over 4 years ago, and aside from needing a new battery, it's still doing exceedingly well.  I couldn't say the same thing about the Dell that preceeded it.  After about 3 years, it would take up a half hour to turn on.  Mac is very user friendly, and really easy to get used to coming from a PC.  And I concur with JaneGold's statement about viruses--in four years, I have never had a single one.  I even convinced my mom to get a mac last year when she needed a new laptop, and she couldn't be happier.  B also has a Mac, an iMac rather than a laptop.  He's had it for 6 years, and it's needed a memory update, but he also keeps thousands and thousands of songs and concerts on it, but aside from that, no problems whatsoever.  Also, I believe Mac offers student discounts, so that may be something for you to look into.

  I don't have a Mac, but I was an HP devotee for a while. No more--the computers I've recently had from them seemed to die on me pretty fast. So I'd say if you go the PC route, avoid HPs. Lenovos seem to be the best PC laptops out there.
  

  I bought a Sony Vaio last time I was in the market for a computer. I wish I'd gone with a Mac.

  I think that I am going to get a Mac.  I am sad that HP's have gone down hill.  We have an Apple store on campus, so when I get the money I am going to do it.  I feel like I making a huge life change,  I have always been a PC user.

  I have a Mac. I'll admit that because I use it only for simple things like web browsing, iTunes and uploading pics, it may not have been worth the extra $ for me. But I will say that I absolutely love how fast it loads up compared to V's (newer) Lenovo. I rarely ever shut it down, just open and close it, and it's such a snap. It's such a silly little thing, but when you have to do that every day, it makes your life so much better.

  Also, if you ever have to do presentations, Powerpoint on the Mac is AWESOME! Way, way better than PP on PC.

  Maybe I'm in the minority, but I still love my HPs. I've had 2, and they're both still kicking. My DH uses my old one, because it's bigger. I used it all through college and most of law school. I've had this current one for the last 3 years, and it's still really fast. The key is to not load them up with crap, like a billion songs and pictures. I try to keep most things on an external drive for that reason. I can see the beauty of a Mac, though, but I won't be pulling the plug with one any time soon.
