Dog re: anyone ever take their dog to an opthamologist?

I think Daisy has cataracts. She is really quite blind and it's affecting her quality of life. Other than her eyes she is in fantastic shape.

I don't even know where to begin in looking for one though- I am not a huge fan of our vet, so I think I am going to call our old one and ask for a recc, but it's not like we have insurance, so we could go anywhere and don't need a referral- right?

    How did it go?

Do you remember how old your dog was when you had it done?

  • he recovered just fine and the surgery was perfect...I'll ask my parents becuase it was their dog when I lived at home...I think he was 7...he ended up dying a few years later around the age of 9 of cancer so as things turned out, it probably wasn't worth the money (his cataracts wasn't that bad, they were getting rid of it before it got worse, in those 2 years he probably could have lived with it...but you just never know and we're the type that do all we can for our dogs)
  • Yeah- Daisy is older, she is 12, but a small breed and otherwise in great health, so we would be doing it for hopefully a 3 year benefit.  I really think it would greatly improve her quality of life, because currently she bumps into things, etc.

  • Carolyn- Baxter has glaucoma, we've seen Dr. Isherwood once so far and we go again tomorrow.  We LOVE her.

You don't need a referral but you will need her records, they like to know her history.

  • We are currently treating him with drops and hoping to avoid surgery.

  • There is a dog opthamologist near the Annapolis Mall that was very good when I brought a foster pup there.  Let me see if I can find it.

I think it was near the Emissions Testing place.

ETA:  I am pretty sure this is the office I went to:

There is also Dr, Hyman whose office is in the same building as the animal ER on Bestgate.

This is who was recc'd by both vets we have seen in Annapolis. I called earlier today and we are going to take Daisy in for an appt. in February. I am trying to time it with when we would get our tax refund.

  • Good luck.  Make sure you ask how much each test costs before they do it.  They add up fast.

Ditto this, it's who we use at BARCS when we send dogs out or who we recommend to rescues taking them.

OK now I am worried that Baxter is getting second rate care. :(  I wonder if I should bring her to Annapolis for a second opinion
