Ladies who CD:

What brands are you using?  Is the hubs involved, and how does he handle it?

Re: Cloth Diapering

  • We used pre-folds and covers till B was 4 months. Then I started using bum genius and flips. Last winter/spring I watched my neighbor's daughter and I CD'd both kids, with both kids I preferred my flips, but that was with 2 kids who (at first) were exclusively breast fed (different poop). Now that it's just B I just Bum Genius and then on laundry day he's in flips. The best part is that several day cares were OK with the bum genius because they work just like disposables. I pre line them before packing them so they are ready to go and then they just stick them in in the wet bag.

Sorry this is a lot longer than I expected.

  • Right now, we are using Green Mountain prefolds and workhorse fitteds.

I have a few Kawaii pockets and BumGenius Elementals and 4.0 (got as seconds from cottonbabies.com).  The Kawaii worked well but the BG are a little too big for his skinny legs right now.  I'm debating doing a diaper trial just to try out some other brands.

As for the hubs, Mr.D is definitely on board with the cloth and it's funny to overhear him telling our friends about them and how well they work and how much money we'll save.

  • We are using just flips right now, and I like them.  JEGs, however, is slowly falling off the cloth diapering band wagon.   I thought about switching to an AOI like Bum Genius to help  ease him back into it, but he is freaking out over the cost.

Jen-- is Mr.D very active in changing diapers?  When I am on night shift, JEGs is responsible for about 4-5 changes and I am wondering if this is about the same as other husbands...

I will admit I am worried about his enthusiasm waning when we get to the sticky poop stage when we start solids.  We'll see...

Yes, Mr.D is the primary diaper changer.  He did almost all the diaper changes for the first two weeks he was home with me and the baby.  Obviously I change the during the day when he's at work but he will change almost all in the evening and will change him before I start overnight feedings.  He feels bad that I'm up so much at night so he figures getting up to change him is his contribution, especially because I am not one to pop out of bed at night.  When he changes him, it gives me 5 or so minutes to wake up a bit, get dressed and grab anything I might need for feedings.

Also, re cost:  keep an eye on Cottonbabies.com for seconds - the BG ones I got were half price and if there was something wrong with them (brand new but usually a stitching error, marks/stains) , I haven't noticed.

I also bought all my covers used from diaperswappers.com and they have tons of people selling pockets and AIOs.  People post pics and the condition so you know what you are getting.

Also, the Kawaii pockets are very cheap.  I got them from jackbenatural.com and I think they were just a little over $7 and came with 2 inserts.

  • No gonna lie the sticky poop sucks compared to the BF poop. But the liners make a huge difference. You still have some time before that happens too. Once we were into the whole thing neither of us considered switching to disposables. I will say this that we learned last week for the first time, when and if your LO has diarrhea use disposables.

  • Lol p sticks to things way better then me. By the time you get to the poop is gross stage you'll already be into a real groove and feeling the cheapness of it. Both of us are fine with the diapers. I wash them and stuff just because laundry is my household job.
  • We used GMD prefolds at the beginning along with FuzziBunz pockets. Once she got older/more mobile we used more BG's. Right now we are all about the BG AIO's. Got them for a steal on Cottonbabies as seconds and can't find a thing wrong with them AND we don't have to stuff, which was getting old. We swear by ImseVimse liners which make poo no big deal-we wash the ones that just get wet and reuse.
