know about caskets? or medical supply donation?

MIL asked me to do a few favors for her today, one of which is find the casket...

I'm gonna go by the funeral home this afternoon as the owner is their family friend, but I'm not having any luck online even finding something close to what she wants.  She wants something with a motorcycle on it.  Do themed caskets even exist?  It doesn't matter what I google, I can't seem to find anything.

I also have to go buy her an outfit, which is going to stress me out but hopefully I can find something.

She also wants me to find somewhere that will accept medical equipment as a donation.  There is a lot of "stuff"-cases of face masks,IV bags, an IV pole, bathroom chair, etc etc. And TONS of medicine-lots of unopened bottles.  And oxygen tanks  Does anyone take that stuff?  Maybe a free clinic or something?

Re: know about caskets? or medical supply donation?

  • There are themed caskets- whether they have them with motorcycles, I have no idea. I know when loved ones have passed, the funeral home has taken care of caskets. Perhaps the friend will be able to help find something.

As far as outfits, I'd buy several and let her pick and return the others.

As far as the equipment, is your local board active at all? That's where I always try with that kind of question. You could also post to freecycle or craigs list. As far as the meds, maybe call the drs office and ask? My guess is they will have to be disposed of, but it can't hurt to ask, especially if any have a seal on them.

    Hang in there!

  • Hopefully the funeral home will have a decal they can put onto a casket.

I agree with Lisa on the outfits, definitely but a couple and then return what she doesn't like.  That's when I find credit cards very handy.  I just make sure to make the returns before the statement date.

As for equipment, I've seen a flier in my hosp advertising getting used equipment from good will, so you could call good will and see if it's a nation wide thing.

  • I agree with pp on the casket/outfit.

As for donations - my only additional thought is that with the medications you may want to contact his doctor's office directly. Most of the time medications will have to be disposed of (can happen at a pharmacy etc.), but some doctor's offices will use them to provide as samples for other clients who can't afford their medications.

  • I didn't even think about maybe just putting a decal on a casket.  I finally found a few themed ones online but they are pretty over the top.  I think MIL would prefer something simple like a decal addition, so I'll ask about that.

And I think Goodwill is definitely my back up option, at least for some of the bigger stuff.  Good idea about asking the doctor if they can use the medicine as samples.  I'm gonna call the free clinic and see if they can use anything I guess?

  • What kind of motorcycle are you looking for?  There are options.  You can have one embroidered on the inside and lap fold over thing or do the whole shebang with a motorcycle.  I did this for DHs grandpa, and there were tons of options.  There is a local store here that is a discount casket place (because the funeral home marks them WAY up).  Do you have anything like that?  There are also places online that do customized caskets.  If they can make a motorcycle gas tank urn, they can probably do this.  We used mainstreetcaskets.com, but they're local and I don't know if they ship.

BTW, you are doing great.  I'm sure they appreciate the help, and they must trust you a lot to pick out these things.  Hang in there.

  • Cassidy, I just wanted to say I'm sorry again. I don't know the answer to any of your questions, but you are such a great wife and daughter-in-law for doing all of this. :-) (((HUGS)))

  • When DH's uncle passed away they got a casket with a lot of chrome type material on it.  He was a big Harley lover so it worked well for him.  His headstone has a motorcycle on it, but they casket they just went for a chrome look.  That's an option if you can't find one with the actual image on there.

I was thinking the exact same thing- you're an amazing person Cass!!

  • I hope all went well today, Cass. If you still have casket questions, pm me. I can talk to my Dad who works for the Catholic Cemeteries, and knows a lot of people in that line of work.
  • Sorry again Cassidy, but these are things that will be very helpful to your inlaws. For the equipment I would ask the durable medical equipment company what they would recommend doing with it. The company may actually take back the oxygen tanks since they can be reused. They may also have information to charities that take the equipment also.
