Basement with no Sump Pump?
My husband and I are bidding on a home that was built in the 1950's and does not have a sump pump and the basement has never flooded. Has anyone ever heard of a home with no sump pump that doesn't flood? thanks!

Re: Basement with no Sump Pump?
The house I grew up in was built in the 1960s and had no sump pump, but actually it flooded if there was anything more than a heavy dew outside. I still have a relative living there and they actually just had a pump system put in last week!
The house we just moved to was built in the 1970s and has no pump, nor does it flood. There was kind of an issue just before we moved in because apparently there was a very heavy rain and the sellers wanted to disclose that it flooded for the first time ever. They got an estimate on putting in a system, but we didn't follow through with it. They had also re-graded the yard and painted waterproof sealant over everything. Since we've lived here, we had many heavy rains and even Hurricane Irene, and there was nothing more than a small puddle that we could wipe up with a towel.
So in summary... yes, there can be such a thing as a dry basement that doesn't have a sump pump.
Our home, built in the 60's, had no sump pump and *supposedly* never flooded.
Yah, we spent last summer ripping out the entire finished basement bc it was full of mold. Since we bought the house 6 yrs ago it has flooded at least once a year. We now have drain tiling. We still havent found the time/money to fix the basement.
I will never again buy a house with a basement without factoring in the cost to add drain tiling into the purchase price.
Its definitely possible. Not every basement is prone to flooding.
My basement is not prone to flooding so we don't have a sump pump. We had major flooding this past September and our basement held. Our backyard was flooded, but we stayed bone dry inside. A lot of people weren't so fortunate. Basements that had never flooded finally did flood... not too surprising with the amount of rain we've had this year. It's January and our grass is still green. It's usually burnt and brown by June.
I'm near Hershey, PA if you're curious about the flooding I'm referring to. Frickin' insane.

Most homes do not have sump pumps in our area. It depends on the circumstances of where the house is located as to whether one is needed or not.
Our basement is dry, no sump pump.
