I know I'm more of a lurker but I figure you guys probably know best.
Ziva, my lab, is weird. If she's curled up on the couch with me at night and gets up, whether to go out or just to move somewhere, she has a pretty noticeable limp. Its ONLY at night and only after she's been curled up.
We're trying to figure out if her leg is just falling asleep (after she has done a bit of walking she's fine and running around again) or if we need to talk to the vet. If we mess with her legs they don't seem to bother her.
DH THINKS its on her left side consistently (he usually notices it more than I do cuz I fall asleep) but isn't positive. She also has zero problems on her walks.
Re: Weird dog limping question
This happens to us too, but Cooper has had 2 knee surgeries & the side he limps w/is the most recent surgical side (he actually doesn't limp, he holds that side up so that he's a 3-legged dog). But he'll be fine on walks & runs.
We have chalked it up to a variety of things; that side being weaker (this side has been nothing but trouble for us since day 1 post-op) since its the most recent (even though its been over a year since his surgery), stiffness...etc. The crazy thing is that his knee checks out fine @ the Vet, exam & xrays are all good!
We consulted another Vet about it & he recommended that Coop be on Deramaxx all the time. We are on the fence about that b/c we don't want to start him out too early on a long-term anti-inflammatory regimine (he's only 7), & we also don't want to miss any potential problem thinking its just a result of his age/surgical history.
Anyway, our comprimise has been to give him 1/2 the dose the Vet wanted. Instead of giving it to him every day, we're giving it to him every other day. So far its going well. Up until a couple days ago he wasn't having any "episodes" where he was reverting to being a Tripod. I can attribute that to a couple things also (he's overdue for a VSMT), so I've got an appt w/the Vet tomorrow to try & cross that off the list of things it could be.
My best advice to you is to keep a record. Write down the times its happening, what your dog was doing before, during, & after her limping episodes. You might end up noticing a pattern that you aren't aware of when you just try to remember from memory. Plus it really helps to be able to present the info on paper to the Vet if need be for the same reason.
GL!
That is fabulous! THANK YOU!
DH was talking about recording hr when she does it to try and keep track. Since it would be difficult to reproduce at the vets would that be beneficial do you think or do you usually just keep a journal? I hope its something silly like her ;eg falling asleep cuz she's only 2!!
I've video'd Cooper. Do as much as you can, can't have too much information ya know!
GL! I hope she's ok too!
Our guy has what the human society called a 'lame left hind leg' but after x-rays couldn't find anything wrong. It only happens when it is cold out, I figure it is just a strange muscle memory, from some accident when he was stray. When we are out walking and it happens, we just try to warm it with a little rubbing. A minute into the walk he is fine and back to himself. He just had his 3rd birthday, by our estimates.
If you adopted Ziva there might be a piece of her past you just don't know.
