Assistance through security to gate?

I'm traveling along with both kids tomorrow and am trying to figure out logistically how to get a one year old, a three year old, a carry-on, two carseats and a stroller through security and boarded. I *think* I'm going to check one carseat at the desk when we check our suitcase (leaving me with two kids, one carry-on, one carseat and the stroller. My biggest concern is security, when I'll have to put the car seat and stroller up on the belt, while removing my and the kid's shoes, while not allowing the kids to run off. I'm definitely not saying it isn't do-able, but it sure doesn't sound fun. If it's possible, my mom said that she'd help up get through security and to the gate, but I'm not sure if this is an option. Anyone have any words of wisdom or info regarding getting a gate-pass?

ETA: I'm thinking I'll put DS in a carrier on my back.

Re: Assistance through security to gate?

  • I can offer no help, except that I  don't think you have to remove the kids' shoes. I remember seeing a sign that said as much the last time I flew.
  • Kids under 12 don't have to take off their shoes.

Not that it makes a damn bit of sense, but it does help you :)

Honestly the TSA will probably leave you alone. I spend a lot of time in security lines and from what I've witnessed they don't make people with small children go through half of the measures as adults traveling alone. Good luck!

  • I don't have any particular advice because I don't have any kids yet, but, unfortunately, they won't let your Mom past the security checkpoint unless she has a boarding pass.  To help expediate your process maybe you can wear slip on shoes?  Then all you have to do is slip them on and off...

  • You might be able to get a pass for your mom to escort you to the gate. It depends on the desk agent though. There was a time my elderly parents were flying back after visiting me and as I was helping them check in, the desk agent saw them struggling to manage their carry-ons, saw me trying to help them, and then offered me an escort pass without us even asking.

And I agree with mxolisi based on my most recent trip experience with my kid. H got all the stuff up on the belt, which meant that I was holding the baby. He always got pulled aside for additional wanding, but me and the baby went through easily.

  • I am fairly certain I was a pack mule in a former life given how much stuff I can travel with in addition to my 2 kids. I would say actually that I would check both car seats with your luggage, your almost 2 year old doesn't need to be in a car seat and could sit with just the belt. We stopped using a car seat with ds about that age because that is right when they are just the right size and position to kick the seat in front of them.

Also I think you could probably get a pass for your mom, just plead your case.

If you can't I would wear your younger child if possible, put your 3 year old in the stroller, put the bag on back of stroller and if you feel you need the car seat then get a bag that has wheels or you can carry on your back with it.

I find that at security TSA is scared to bother me with my kids. I beeped on our last trip a couple of weeks ago and there was a sort of panic about what would happen with my 8 month old and 3 year old before they realized my son was there. Kids under 12 do not remove their shoes.

  • When my kids were the same ages as your two I did a few trips on my own with them.  I found it easiest to wear the baby and push the toddler in an umbrella stroller.  I checked both car seats.  My carry-on was a backpack so I could either wear it or hang it on the umbrella stroller when #1 was in it or put it on the seat when #1 was refusing to sit in the stroller.  As everyone else mentioned, the kids don't have to take off their shoes anymore.  You should wear slip-ons to make it easier.  Also, don't wear a coat in the airport; I always put mine in the front pocket of my checked bags.

As for security - wait until to the last minute to let your toddler out of the stroller.  Ask the TSA agent if you can walk through wearing the baby.  Some will let you, some will not.  I was able to walk through wearing #2 in a baby bjorn, which had a little metal in the clasps & it didn't set off the sensor.  You should walk through first and then ask #1 to follow you slowly.  My 3 year old often runs through and they make her go back and do it again.

    Good luck!

I was just told in Atlanta last week that you are allowed in any airport in the US to wear your baby through security. I am skeptical of that. They let me though and then just did a test on my hands.

Is the shoe thing new?  I've flown with DS about 10 times and every time they've made him take off his shoes.  Even when he was a little baby (we're talking 8 weeks old) and was wearing little booties, they made us take them off.   I'd be prepared to take them off, maybe put them in shoes that are easily removable.

Brit, good luck!  Have a good trip.

Yes, it's fairly new. I've seen signs stating this at several airports.

  • Some airports have a family line, which makes life easier (and faster).

I'd just ask at the ticket desk if there was someone to help out.

  • I second the family line.  It is much quicker so you don't have corral them for so long and you have more space since people aren't cramming in.
  • your mom can't go through security (or even probably get past the part of the line where they check boarding passes and IDs) so that wont help you.

when you get there ask one of the TSA people if they could help you out.

f you dont need both carseats check them. if you have a car seat and one stroller i can't see why youd need another or even how you'd physically carry all of th atstuff. do you really need any car seat at all for the flight?

This isn't completely true. They do issue passes to allow people to go through security to help with family members. Typically they do it with children traveling alone, but I have actually been given one before. It is just a matter of whether or not the ticketing agent is nice enough to give her one.

It is new, just within the past month or two. No kids under 12 need to remove their shoes, it is an across the board TSA change.

yes i know they do however because it's onyl 2 kids a stroller and a car seat i dont know if she should count on it as i 've only seen that done iwth people who need medical help or kids alone.

the no shoe removal for kids under 12 started in november. not like it speeds things up at all :)

  • Everyone else covered the detail but I wanted to point out that every airport is different and it can change depending on the agents, just because one airport has a sign at one airport does not mean another is doing it the same way and just b/c for example you were allowed to wear the baby through security on the way there you might not be allowed on the way back...sometimes b/c of different agents and sometimes because rules change that quickly.  My comments are mostly based on DH's experiences b/c he travels weekly.

While I agree with this in regards to wearing a baby (I have been told a million different things when traveling and wearing my kids) the thing with kids under 12 not having to remove their shoes is an across the board TSA change. They made a big deal about it when they changed the rules and it was everywhere (news, paper, etc). ALL airports have to implement this change.
