f/u portable potty

Please school me on the how-to's in potty training.  I seriously just need a quick tutorial.  Abby is currently wearing underoo's, climbing up on the potty, doing her thing, climbing down, flushing, and washing hands.  How on earth do I make this transition to the real world.  I'm petrified to take her in public with the 'roos on, in the car, etc.  Can't she just wear diapers forever? :-)

Start me off in the right places, ladies!  TIA!

  • You're doing fantastic!!  You've got the hardest part done!  The first few trips out of the house are absolutely terrifying with a newly PT'd child, but I remember telling myself that I just had to do it.  And honestly, we've never had an accident out of the house (knock on wood).  Just a little tip that probably earns me TONS of sideyes at the playground, but when there are no port a potties around (which is often), I bring Jake to the car, open the door and stand behind him...this way he's in a little triangle area bordered by the interior of the car, the door & me.  For extra good measure, I hold a big blanket behind him so he's very private, and then he can pee at the park and we don't have to cut trips short for lack of facilities.  You do what you've gotta do!

  • We have kept a little potty in the car just in case and have used it on occasion.  Adrian has peed in many random places (parking lots, play grounds, etc) while we're out and about too...Shhh. If he's diaper free and I am afraid he might pee, I throw a prefold on the carseat.  That way if he does pee on accident, it doesn't make a mess of the carseat.

  • We bought this (http://amzn.com/B001C51TIE) to go in the car seat in case of an accident out and about. Eli also wore one of these covers (http://amzn.com/B0035JL91C) over his underwear when we went out (and when he went to daycare) at first so that if he did have an accident it was more contained. We were big on not going back to diapers once we really started potty training. It was very scary at first and makes going out more a process now, but he's been doing great.

In general with potty training we were very dependent on a timer at first, and still are somewhat. We set it for a certain amount of time (20 min at first, then 30, now closer to an hour) and he knows it's "time to sit on the potty!!" when the timer goes off. After the first few days, pee accidents have been extremely rare. Pooping took a month or so, but those accidents are rare now too.

Now we just need to move to more independence with the process (climbing up/down, pulling pants on/off, washing hands by himself) and voicing when he needs to go, rather than waiting until someone tells him to go.

Abby is all too independent EXCEPT for the "forgetting" part.  She plays hard and seems to forget.  We need to remember to ask more often.
