Toddler bed discussion *Huzzy come in*

At what age did we all transition from crib to toddler bed? There's no rush for us, but my Sister gave us my Neice's toddler bed, and it's been sitting in her room for a few weeks now. A loves playing on it, and pretends to sleep on it sometimes. She seems very interetsed...so DH and I a few nights ago tried to get her to fall asleep in it but she wasn't having it at all. It was a giant fail.

We still have time, so we won't push the issue with her now, but soon we will have to start since the new baby will need her crib.

Any advice for me ladies?

Huzzy- based on your FB posts it looks like your gearing up to start this too? Or have you already made the transition? Help please!

  • :) I told ya we are living the same life! HAHA! Well poor K has a lot of transition... We had done no painting or anything when we moved into this house because we were just in a hurry to get outta my in laws and into our own house again. So K's room was all wallpaper (like most of the house) and just gross. So yesterday we moved her into the soon to be baby boy nursery so we can tear apart her room. DH had to take the crib apart in order to get it out the door of her room...so I said...well why not put the half rail on. Next weekend we are picking up a twin sized bedroom set from a friend of mine's mom ... (they are downsizing and don't need it). So yesterday she was sleeping in her crib with the toddler rail. She actually really loves it and calls it her big girl bed. She loves being able to jump into her bed and read when she's playing in her room. So far... knock on wood... She's had no problems with it. Yesterday's nap she cried for about 10 min...(I think it was mostly because her nap was later than usual because we were rearranging everything). Last night she went right to sleep and never got up at all and slept her usual 8:30pm-8am. Right now she is in there for a nap...she hasn't fallen asleep yet.. but she hasn't gotten back out of the bed either. I thought this would be a lot harder because not only is she in a 'different' bed... but a whole new room..and her real room is torn apart. But so far she is doing great! I am not sure if this has a lot to do with the fact that when she's at daycare (1-2 days a week) she sleeps on a cot which is like 3-4 inches off the ground... So maybe that's why she feels ok sleeping on a bed here. I was imagining she would roll right out of this bed because she's all over the crib when she sleeps... but so far so good!

She also went #1 on her potty today! I am hoping that's a good sign! Have u started potty training at all? My kinda 'goal' is to get her into her big girl bed and potty trained a while b4 the next baby (if possible). I almost want her to forget about her crib and old furniture by the time the baby is here so she doesn't feel 'pushed' out of her stuff.. if that makes any sense?

  • I am ordering the rails this week.  He has now clued out 4 times.  We will be transitioning soon so I will be following this post. My scare is the room sharing.  He climbs in C's crib with ease.  If he can walk around he'll be in there. I do know I will be putting a lock on outside of room (hook and lock).

  • I'm not much help either. Aiden has been randomly climbing out since thanksgiving. I'm in denial. Lol. I thought about taking off the one side of his crib to see what happens.

Im just afraid that he won't nap in a bed. Thats what happened with my friends son. Id def try to give yourself as much time to transition before the baby comes. GL

  • sue never climbed out fully but almost did several times.  she was in the loft off our bedroom (only 4 ft walls) so she had to be moved out of there as soon as she did that.  so in order to transition her into a new bedroom we started by putting her crib and toddler bed in there and a few pieces of furniture at a time.  in the beginning she would nap in the toddler bed/ sleep at night in the crib.  the first few times she actually fell asleep first and we put her in it so she would wake up from the nap in the toddler bed.  eventually she napped there for about a month before we had her sleeping in there.  we transitioned to the toddler bed by taking the crib out of the room all together.  i was shocked, but getting her to sleep there at night time was no problem.  the first 3 nights she was in there she might have called me in the room once a night but went back to sleep no problem.    for whatever reason she wont get out of the bed without permission, so if she needs something she just calls and calls for us until one of us shows up.  we moved her around 22 months i think.  by her second birthday she was fully into her new bedroom with the toddler bed.

  • Huzzy- Totally the same life! We will try again in a few weeks but A didn't do nearly as well as K did. It was a total mess. As for potty training, I'm nowhere near going down that road yet. I know she isn't ready and I'm not going to push it yet. I'm fully expecting her to be diapers closer to age 3, and then I'll probably try if she isn't ready sooner.

  • We are actually going to start K in her crib converted to toddler bed hopefully in about 2 weeks when we get back from our trip to Chicago.  The problem is that she won't stay there, there is no question about it.  My parents ultimately are getting her a twin bed as her xmas gift, but we have no room for it and she's nowhere near ready for it yet.

Same thing with potty training, we dabble  and she goes,  but I'm not making any major changes now with DS due in 2 months.  I'm expecting her to regress a bit.

  • A never climbed out either but he was getting too tall for me to be comfortable with him being in there and not (1) getting out or (2) falling out.  So we transitioned him to a todder bed when he was 2 years 3 months.  We timed the transition for after we were had been away on vacation and A was used to sleeping out of his crib and on a toddler air mattress.  When we got back we had his new bed all set up & ready for him as a homecoming present.  It made the transition a little easier....but it does take time.  I had many a night sleeping on the floor of his room.

We recently moved up to a full size bed at 3 years 4 months (again due to height - poor kid was just about touching both sides of the bed when he stretched out).  His crib converted to both bed sizes so wasn't a big deal to have such a short time in the toddler bed.  I would have kept him in the toddler bed had he not been so tall ;)

    Good luck!

  • Yeah, I feel like I'm going to spend more than a few nights sleeping on the floor in her room next to the bed until she can learn to stay put and not climb out. I feel like doing this now would be easier than doing this when I'm 8 months pregnant. And it really needs to be done before #2 arrives because I'm not dealing with a newborn and a toddler both not sleeping. (I'm assuming the newborn will be a bad sleeper since A was) LOL. DH works midnights so it's just me here overnight dealing with this. I'm dreading this but I guess I just gotta get it overwith!
