So, im going out to sushi for the first time (well, I've gone out to sushi before...but never had it. I'd order yakisoba, etc.)
This is a first...but I want to try it. I really like fish (this is also new to me, but now I can't get enough fresh fish) but don't really care that much for shellfish because of the texture (scallops, shrimp, etc.)
So...what do I start out with? (I know the obvious one would be California rolls. I'm not huge on them because I don't care for avacado, but I can stomach them) What should I stay away from so I don't have a scarring experience when it comes to sushi?

I strangely like smoked salmon/lox, etc....which I have been told are fishy, but yes, sashimi might be a little much for me. Not sure if I'd like shrimp tempura...but might be worth a shot!
My favorites are spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and especially spicy scallops.
I would suggest a salmon and a vegetable one to start. That will help you ease into it. I think Boston and Tuna were my intro sushi pieces.
I love almost every type of sushi. I could eat it at every meal... but I wasn't always that way
In the beginning, I stuck to mostly cooked rolls. If you see anything that has crunch or tempura on it, you're safe. Those are mostly, if not all, cooked rolls. Now, I try to mainly stay away from the fried stuff and I eat mostly raw.
If you want to venture into raw fish, definitely try the Salmon / Avocado rolls, or Philadelphia Rolls (those usually are salmon and cream cheese, or crabstick and cream cheese - not usually real crab, but some mixture of whitefish, cod, etc). Another good one, like other people mentioned is spicy tuna. Go with what flavor fish you typically like, and start by ordering a cooked roll to see how you like it. Then venture into the "raw" version of it. Or do a mix. A lot of places will have rolls that are half cooked / half raw (for example, a shrimp tempura roll, with slices of raw tuna on top, drizzled with spicy mayo, or sweet chili sauce or eel sauce.)
Enjoy!
I've been craving sushi all day!! I usually get the spicy tuna rolls or california rolls. I love avocado though. The only really good sushi restaurant in Pittsburgh serves the platters with tuna, salmon, yellowtail and snapper and i usually get double tuna or salmon because I dislike snapper.
Seared ahi tuna from Ruth's Chris was the first type of sushi that I ever tried and now I crave it!! so good!!
I love raw salmon (not smoked). It tastes like butter!
But I agree with the others that rolls might be a good way to start. Especially tempura rolls or spicy rolls, since they have a lot of non-fish, non-avocado flavor.
