aruba, curacao, or trinidad?

which would be your preference? any pros/cons of each?

dh and i are thinking about these three islands for around 5 nights this summer. we like beaches, snorkeling, and food. we're up for other activities too depending on what's available or we can just lie on the beach all day- we're really not hard to please.

Re: aruba, curacao, or trinidad?

  • Trinidad is having terrible crime issues http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1043.html

I like Aruba, but it's kind of boring (which I like).

    Curacao, no idea.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • hm, shame to hear about trinidad. we have a couple of acquaintances from there who talk about beautiful it is.
  • I've been to Aruba and Curacao and enjoyed Curacao a lot more than Aruba as I felt the same as pp and thought Aruba was kind of boring. Curacao has a lot more culture and things to do in my opinion.

A friend of mine is from Trinidad, and she and her husband just got back from a trip there last week. They had a great time, but she said they rented a house in Tobago for New Years, since it has better beaches over there. You can either take a 3 hour ferry ride or a 15 minute flight to get from Trinidad to Tobago. Her pictures were beautiful, and it's definitely a place I'd like to check out.

  • Tobago has much better beaches than Trinidad and is just a cheap ferry away, per my DH (Trini) He suggests that tourists stay on Tobago if they want a beach vacation. There is crime in Port of Spain, due to increased trafficking from South America. There was a curfew in place, but that has been lifted for a while now. We are going next month for Carnival. I'm leaving my rings at home, but that's the only extra precaution we are taking. Trinidad is interesting because they have oil reserves so tourism is not their main business so you can still get that authentic carribean experience. Trini food is out of this world! It's a blend of African, Indian, French, and several other cultures. I'm more excited the food than the actual carnival, lol.

I have a dear friend who's originally from Curacao. I've never been, but the pictures I've seen are gorgeous.

  • not a fan of aruba LOVE LOVE LOVE curacao and there's FAR better snorkeling there then aruba. for the same reasons summer listed above i prefer it. i also found that it has spectacular food.

never been to trinidad but my neighbor is from there and the foods awesome.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • Aruba has all the things you are looking for. I've been there twice and going back in March. H and I love it because we relax most days at the beach/pool but can do activities if we want. They also have many amazing restaurants.

    I haven't been to the other 2 islands so I can't compare.

  • I went on a large group trip to Curacao.  It is not typical caribbean-beachy pretty and it was disappointing to some.  That said we had some great day trips: snorkeling, a full day sail to a small island off the coast, a dune buggy trip to a cave filled with bats.  The restuarants were good, but the main city by our hotel was not one for strolling around at night (this was away from the port city).  I liked it but the group we were with would have been better in Aruba.

  • on our most recent trip to Aruba, we decided to take the short flight to CUR for 2 nights.  My comparison of the two islands:

if you want a beach vacation, definitely go to Aruba.

If you want an underwater/cultured vacation, go to Curacao.

Aruba is much more Americanized (Dunkin Donuts everywhere, Benihana, etc) and caters to tourists.  Curacao is much more European, nowhere near as many American tourists, lots of cute cafes.   No real "culture" so to speak in Aruba - just a big beachy island :)
