New Zealand Packing suggestions
We're heading to NZ in February for 15 nights on the south island. We'll be seeing city and mountains alike including glaciers. anyone have any suggestions on packing list for the time we are there? I know it's technically summer, though the end of it.
Re: New Zealand Packing suggestions
We were there for three weeks in mid-March through early April, so it was probably a little cooler for us than it will be for you. I packed: five t-shirts, five long-sleeved shirts, one sweater, one cardigan, two pairs of jeans, one pair of cotton pants (for hiking), a three-way jacket (fleece and rain shell that could be zipped together or worn separately), one pair of walking shoes (Merrell sneaker type shoes), one pair of flip-flops, one pair of flats (for the evenings - probably didn't really need them, but I hated putting my walking shoes back on after wearing them all day!), long underwear for the glacier hike, a hat, gloves, socks, and underwear.
Double-check with the company through which you're doing the glacier hike - they will likely provide all of the gear that you need, which was the case with ours (down to socks and hiking boots). I really only wore the heavy jacket (i.e. both layers together) and the hat and gloves for our Doubtful Sound cruise. It may not be cold enough while you're there that you would need a heavy jacket, but I would definitely bring one that is water-resistant (if you get cold, you can always layer a sweater underneath). Also, most places are pretty casual, so you should be fine in jeans and a shirt unless you go to a really nice restaurant.
Hope that helps!

Just in case it wasn't clear enough: Waterproof, waterproof, waterproof!
Don't forget sunscreen!
We're going in May so I don't really have any suggestions, yet. It's going to be fall so I plan on lots of layers. I think a lot of the places we're looking at have washing machines.
Can you please post a trip report when you get back? We're spending 13 days on the South Island and it sounds like we're going to be doing a lot of the same things as you.
Have a great trip!
We went at the same time and lucked into 10 straight days of sun, that includes 2 days in fiordland.
Still... bring a lightweight water resistant jacket. I had convertible hiking pants that had some water resistance as well. Those worked out really well b/c mornings were cool, but middle of the day could get hot.
Other than that, I brought nothing specific. Just a mix of short and long sleeves, jeans, my hiking shoes were also my every day shoes. I never felt I had to be dressed up. We managed 2 weeks, 10 days in the SI, with just a small backpack each.
I think I brought a fleece to layer under my jacket (which is sort of fleece lined), but I don't think I ever used it.
We did go to one really fancy restaurant in Blenheim and were still fine in jeans.
