So frustrated! Need vaca recs for March

I'm just overwhelmed with options and need help! First, we were going to Jamaica for a few days, which is where we got married. Nice, relaxing beach vaca with no kiddo. Then, we got some extra vaca days and 'surprise' money, so we're thinking something more adventurous and further away. We pretty much settled on Peru, but now I'm having second thoughts. After a lot of research, it's sounding a bit more rugged than I originally wanted. We'd like to to Greece, but I'm reading that lots of places are closed during the off season. Our budget is about $5k or so, and of course we want to get the most bang for our buck. Any suggestions for somewhere in March? Thanks!

  • The Nest ate my original post. GRRR.

I wouldn't go to Greece in March if you planned on island hopping - most are closed right down. April would be better.

Have you thought about a city like Paris, Rome, or Budapest? 3 of my fave cities which would be great to visit in March - cheaper, less crowded, etc. Good sightseeing weather for the first two, and maybe a bit chilly in Budapest but not terrible.

If you want something warm, how about Hawaii? Maui is fantastic in March for whale-watching. We joked when we were there in march that we could trip over the whales they were so prevalent.

I would also consider Costa Rica, Los Cabos Mexico (we did fantastic tours here - ATVing, ziplining, fishing)....

If you want a ski holiday (maybe not, with your locale) you could look at Banff & Lake Louise.

So many great places you can go with that budget!

  • If you look down the posts a bit to the one titled Istanbul & Greece, I talked about our off season trip to Greece.

If you still want to try Latin America, we did a trip to non-resort/central Mexico a couple of years ago and loved it. I have also been to Peru and the Mexico trip was much less "rugged". It was easy to get around, lots to see, good food, cute colonial towns, many cool ruins, and we felt very safe (much safer than we did in Peru). Another plus is that it is close and no jet lag. If you want more info, let me know and I will give you the specifics on where we went.

  • I'm really intrigued by Panama. Supposedly that's one of the hot new places to go according to a travel magazine I was flipping through recently. That and I've seen it on House Hunters International a couple times. : ) Some nice beaches, some quaint cololonial towns. Seeing the actual canal might be cool too, I don't know.

I'm also intrigued by Iceland. There is now a direct flight from Denver to Reykjavik, which is why I've been especially interested lately. Not entirely sure if March is a great time to go. I'd look into that. But blue Lagoon and all that could be your relaxing part.

  • I'd go with Costa Rica or Hawaii....I'm planning a trip for next year to Costa Rica
  • We did 10 days in Costa Rica for under $5k, so it's definitely an option. We went in December, though, so I can't speak for March. But it's a great country with so much to do. You can be very active, or laze on the beach, or do a combination of both.
