This morning, I get into my classroom and get settled, only to have one of my precious 8th grade girls come in and ask if I'd heard about the shooting in which some kids from the upper school had been shot.
I had to ask her to repeat herself twice.
Apparently, there was some kind of altercation outside the mall not too far from my house, and two bystanding students from my school (I don't teach them, but I teach their friends and siblings) were caught in the crossfire as they waited for a parent to pick them up. They're fine, and went home from the hospital today. The police have arrested a suspect.
I'm glad they're okay, but I am freaked the hell out. This happened about two miles from where I live, and it was only about 9:30 at night. What's odd is that I always considered this to be the safe part of town...
