Benihana with kids?

Anyone been to Benihana with kiddos?  Did they like it?  Did they eat anything?  Do they do anything special with kids?

We're headed there Friday with the ILs and I admit it's just going to be a train wreck. Part of it (as usual), we're not meeting until 6:45 which is closer to bed time than dinner time and I know the kids will get bored at a longer type dinner and will be tired, especially since it's Friday and by the end of the week, they are both tired and ready to just crash.  But this is the only BIL and SIL can go, so once again, we have to comprimise with them (but somehow it's always us comprimising and not them....)

I'm looking forward to this, can you tell?

  • We just went for the first time to a hibachi style place a couple of weeks ago. Definitely fun for kids!  The hibachi chefs are very entertaining and I'm sure they'll have a few tricks up their sleeves for the kiddos like the volcano.  As far as the food goes, it's pretty basic stuff.  My dd likes steak, check, shrimp, rice and veggies.  I find that a lot of kids like more basic individual type foods than things put together anyway.  It'll be a fun adventure for them!

  • This helps, thank you.  My kiddos aren't plain meat or veggie eaters, even though I've tried, so I am a little worried they will be too picky to want to eat.  I may have to feed them earlier before we go anyways, so maybe I'm just fretting over nothing.

  • Given the food pickiness, time of day etc...I'd hire a sitter and try to make the most of it for dh and I.

I'd love to, but this dinner is what FIL requested for Christmas.  Originally we were going to do Pasquini's, but SIL felt that wasn't fancy enough even though FIL said he didn't need fancy, just all of us together.  He's mentioned several times, he wants us all there.
  • We went to a hibachi place on Friday night and took DD (just turned 2).  She was kind of freaked out by it, honestly.  She did ok for most of it but when they set the whole grill on fire, it scared her. She didn't eat a bite even though it was mostly things she would normally eat (rice, veggies, scrambled eggs).  I think she didn't eat because she was overwhelmed by it all.  That being said, there were a lot of other kids there that seemed to be enjoying themselves so it probably depends more on your kids' temprement.

  • My kids love it!  We are actually going again for my birthday on Sunday.  My little guy (almost 2.5) does not sit still and is terrible in most restaurants. He was in awe at Benihana and watched the guy cooking the whole time.  My daughter (5) loves it!  The chefs always pay extra special attention to them and do lots of tricks.  Good luck!

  • O was a little freaked by the volcano too, so you might just warn them ahead of time.  I didn't think to do it.  He was ok after that.
