Anyone not go to museums when traveling in cities

I was just thinking about it b/c it seems to be the first suggestions when talking about what to do in a city. I am not sure if it is just that people on The Nest/Bump are big into art or if this is just what people do when they travel. I grew up less than an hour from NYC and have only been to MOMA once, the Museum of Natural History twice when I was in school on trips and I went to I think it was the Science Museum in Boston when I lived there. Don't get me wrong, I will visit other older historical buildings like churches and when I lived in Nashville we saw a few sites from the Civil War but I guess I am not a big museum fan. I did do the British Museum with DH before we had kids. Am I the only one that does not do more museums?

Yeah, this summer at MoMA is all I will ever need! I need to get the Museum of Natural History with the kids soon, maybe I will do that while the weather is still cold. I also need to get to the Liberty Science Center.
Exactly. Plus there are different kinds of museums. H and I usually go to historical museums but are not at all interested in art museums.

People are different and travel different. I was actually talking about your Tower of London post with London nesties the other night when we were out to dinner.
I could spend hours there, I love history, I read all the signs, I will go back to sites I have been to before and revisit. Another nestie said she did the tower in 17 minutes. I didn't get that at all.
I have a useless degree in history though, so it's my thing it's not for everyone.
Same with museums. I agree with Emily though it depends on the museum as well. I'm not really into modern art. My H belonged to the Tate Modern, I don't get it. Some of it I can relate to, but if it looks like something a 3 year old autistic student of mine could have done I'm stumped as to why it's in a museum.
I often use their bathrooms though since it's free to get in and I walk by there on the weekends. Works out well for me.
Bio
We live in Chicago and have been to all of the museums; for some, once is enough and for others (like Science and Industry), we try to go whenever they change traveling exhibits b/c we find them intriguing.
I love NYC's Natural History Museum and although I've only been to NYC twice, both for 5 day trips, both times I've gone to it b/c I loved it so much the first time.
I think museums can be an interesting insight to other cultures, especially when traveling iternationally...but like pp said, different strokes for different folks.

I live close to NYC, too. I've only gone to the MoMA once (modern art is not really my thing), but I loooove going to the Met. On average, I go twice a year on my own. I take my students a few times a year, too. Usually, I take my students to the Natural History museum once a year - I'm not a huge fan, so I don't go on my own.
I'm not super artsy, but I do love history, so I see it more as a way of visualizing history.

Even though I do love many museums, there are plenty of trips I take when I don't want anything to do with them.
What I find weird is that if I'm traveling with H I'm less likely to want to go to a museum. It's more of a solitary activity for me.
for me, the tate modern might be my all-time favorite art museum. but i went to art school, took a lot of art history, and think it's awesome that the museum was a power station before. but, i do understand that not everyone has the same interest level that i do. i'm much less interested in science and space museums than other people.
DH & i both appreciate architecture and history so that helps when we're planning trips. we also go more here in DC because they are free. we can go see one exhibit or wander for an hour without feeling the need to stay awhile.
when we're on vacation, we like to do a mix of museums/architectural sites, a walking tour, and just wandering at our own pace. we like quirky museums such as the frederic mares museum in barcelona. it was full of his quirky collections and we could have spent hours there (we went less than two hours before it closed so it was free, we'd happily pay the admission next time we go).
basically, we go to museums on most vacations but because we like to. not everyone is into them.
I work at an art museum, so when I go somewhere new, I like to visit any particularly important museums. But I have limited tolerance for wandering the galleries and looking at every single thing. I look for the biggies that blew my mind in school or random new things that catch my eye and keep me looking and looking at them.
When I was just out of school, I went to Italy with a friend, and I had a lot of museums on my must-see list. Friend got bored and trailed after me with her nose stuck in a romance novel.
But when DH and I were in Barcelona recently, I don't know that we went to any art museums. We went on a couple walking tours and visited churches and wandered around and ate.
