moms/nurses - weird blisters on a baby?
My baby (7.5 months old) has some weird blisters. I noticed them this morning and now there are more. The worst one is on her pinky finger. There are also some in the diaper area, and on her feet/toes, and I think I see some starting to appear around her mouth. However I looked in her mouth as best as I could and I did not see any inside. I searched the internet and it does not appear to be chicken pox since those early blisters are usually clear, but these are definitely red. Maybe hand foot and mouth disease (but there are none in her mouth)? She is down for a nap now so I have not taken her temp, but she did not feel hot to me at all. She has been abnormally fussy for the last day or so, but has still been breastfeeding pretty normally and had good wet and poopy diapers. I am trying to figure out if I should take her in to see the pediatrician or not. None of my older two ever had anything like this, and they are not showing any symptoms now (although my 2.5 year old did have a day of fever last week on Thursday, but no rash). Any ideas what I should do? This parenting thing is hard!!

Mama's Gonna Buy You A Mockingbird
We have started solids very basically, but nothing new that I know of (although the 2yo really likes to try to "feed" the baby so that's something we're working on).
Could it be contact dermatitis on the feet and diaper area??
Also when your DS got it, how long did it stay around? These have stuck around all day so far (and possibly came up during the night last night - it was dark when I fed her so I wasn't looking) - and new ones are starting to form too.
What is the difference between a welt and a blister? The ones on the fingers and toes definitely look like blisters to me, but the diaper area ones are flatter and I guess could be welts.
I was going to say hand, foot, and mouth. DS and I had it two years ago--he got it in his mouth and diaper area, I only got it on my hands and feet. I can tell you--it really hurt! I remember when DS got it, I had no idea what was wrong at first, but he was soooo cranky.
I was thinking HFM too. DD#2 has been very cranky as well! When you guys had it, did anything help you?
Thanks - I saw you answered me already, as I was typing the above post.
You can actually get hand/foot/mouth but not have it in the mouth at first (or at all!)
Because of the locations she has the lesions, and that they are blisters I would highly suspect hand/foot/mouth.
There isn't really any treatment for it other that supportive therapy.... You know your kid better than any of us- if she's acting "off", has a change in eating habits, or is running a temp I'd take her in for peace of mind.

Oh that does sound like HFM and I'm sorry she has it!
We just went through this over New Years - yup little blisters on Micah's hands, knees and butt and blisters on Bryn's Mouth only. The nurse said it basically has to run it's course and they usually don't give a Rx, but can give a Rx mouthwash to numb if needed. Since she's so little you might try baby orajel - it makes them cry when you put it in (DS#1 is 5 and hated it), but it numbs for a long time. Basically it starts with a fever and then the blisters break out about when the fever breaks and then you're only contagious about 2-3 days after that or until the blisters start to harden over.
The best way to prevent spreading to other kids/yourself is to wash hands really well and hand-sanitize a ton. Both of my kids were way less fussy when the blisters popped up.
ETA: Oh and we also used infant IB to help with the pain/fever/ickiness and DS#1 swore the drinking chocolate shakes was the best cure.
Are you united with the CCOKCs?
Thanks everyone! I will start some infant IB when she wakes up if she is still fussy, and try to BF more than normal - she's not really into solids very much at all.
Tons of handwashing for the other kids! But they are all three kind of all over each other all the time, so I guess if they were to get it then they probably have already been exposed... time will tell I guess.
Poor little babe! I feel so bad for sick babies!
Late to this thread, but HFM is going around. My dD and all of her daycare buddies had it about three weeks ago and thank goodness they were all feeling better in about 3 days.
Hope it moves through your household quickly!
