529 in Nebraska?

Does anyone have a 529 in Nebraska for college savings?  We are planning to start one soon, but I'm not sure if any of the Nebraska 529's (even with the in-state tax deduction) are better plans that Utah's, etc.  Thoughts?  I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. :(

TIA!

Re: 529 in Nebraska?

  • We do.  We had Virgina's plan because they were the best at the time, but last year we switched to NE because the tax deduction plus the plan overall has improved now that it's had more time to mature.  Even in the down economy, we've made money.  We went through our FA, I trust whatever he tells me.  :)
  • We have a Virginia plan for our son, as the performance has been better, and it more than offset the NE state tax deduction for us.  But, like luvjon, we talked about this extensively with our FA, who I trust immensely.  I think you should talk to your FA too.
  • Here's a question I have...my parents set one up for the kids when they were born and they put in I think $1000 initially for each kid, but since then my sister and I put something into them each month...so shouldn't we be getting some tax deduction...I'm sure my dad is taking it since he has the plan in his name...how do we get around that?  If I'm putting money into it, I want the deduction!!!
  • We do. We opened it when Gavin was a year old. I did some research and I have a friend who did extensive research prior to going with the Nebraska plan. We felt like it was an excellent plan and was the one for us.

  • Thanks for the information ladies!!!  This is very helpful!  :)  If you are willing to share, which NE plan did you go with?  There were 4 listed when I looked.  Ugh!  I keep going back and forth between the tax deduction vs. Utah's (I read reviews that this is a very good one).

Also, who would you recommend using for a financial advisor??

This is my concern.  Some of the other 529's performance may be better than taking the tax deduction with the NE state plans.

Our FA is Mike Knier with Edward Jones in Papillion.  He's done well for us, he could tell you the pros/cons of UT, VA, NE plans.
