Kid hotel sleeping arrangements

What would be your preference for traveling with a 2 year old and a 3 month old?

We had originally planned on getting a king sized bed, bed sharing with the 3 month old and putting the 2 year old in a crib.  But, we thought the 2 year old would probably complain about being the only one sleeping by himself.  So, we switched to a room with 2 double beds and thought that we could each sleep with 1 kid.  Now I'm looking at pictures of the hotel and the floors are tile.  A kid falling out of the bed is going to result in something major, like a cracked tooth.  So, now, I'm thinking about going back to the king bed and putting 2 cribs in the room.  Although, hotel cribs make me nervous and our 3 month old doesn't sleep in a crib at home, so there might be some very long nights.

So, what do you guys prefer for sleep arrangements traveling with kids

  • Friends of mine travel with these: http://blog.babygizmo.com/2010/08/spotlight-product-review-peapod-plus/

Many hotels have cribs that are available by request.

  • My DS is 2 know and we have always traveled with our Pack and Play.

He was 6 months old the first time we traveled and I am not sure before then if he would of slept in the Pack and Play.

Your kids are beautiful by the way:)

  • I would get a king bed, have the 4 year old sleep with us and the baby in a pack and play. DD sleeps in a pack and play in our room now so i'm not concerned. We also have the travel pod but we use it when we are not at a hotel and don't want to travel with our pack and play.

  • We do two pack n plays for our 2 year old twins.  Works great.  They are still in cribs in home and have never bed shared or slept with us so they need to have their own space for now.
  • What makes you nervous about hotel cribs? Most hotels I've stayed at use a pack n play and you can buy a pack n play cover to cover the whole pack n play:

I saw it on Shark Tank and it's pretty cool. I would call the hotel first to see if they do a pack n play or crib. The hotels I've stayed at that have had cribs have had really good quality cribs and they were very clean (their high chairs are another story).

Anyway, maybe get two cribs and a king so you can have the most flexibility without having to worry about single beds. The cribs are also good to put them in when you are trying to get things done and you need them in a safe place. Or you can bring your own and bring one for each kid.

There's just really no way to know how often they get inspected, how well they are cleaned, etc.  We've used hotel cribs for our oldest.  Some are great.  Some aren't.  That's ok for him, but I worry a lot more about that kind of thing for the youngest.  Plus we're going to Mexico and they don't have to adhere to the same safety standards.  The only thing we use cribs for, even at home, is sleep.  We don't use them as a place to put kids while we're getting things done.  Our littlest one doesn't even sleep in a crib yet.

We are considering the crib option and if we go for the cribs we won't be bringing them from home.  Lugging 2 PnPs to Mexico just isn't going to happen (and would require buying another PnP).

  • we took our kids to Cancun last year, they were 35mo and 15mo at the time. We got 2 beds, the floors were tile and there were stairs in the room, which were a nightmare as my 15-mo was obsessed with stairs!

We got a crib for the baby, it collapsed the moment I put him in! We got another one but needless to say we never used it! We put it next to the bed as a rail, sort of. There was also a nightstand there, I put that all against the bed and used pillows as a buffer (DS moves a lot). I was the buffer on the other side and we co-slept like that.

DH slept with the 35-mo old,  he was the buffer on one side and we put comforters/pillows on the floor on the other side.

I don't blame you, I would not use a Mexican hotel crib either!!

  • We usually request a crib for DD2 from the hotel, and then get either two double beds and let DD1 have her own, or a king bed and have DD1 sleep with us. Ideally we like to have a nook where we can put the crib so our bed is out of DD2's eyesight; she sleeps much better when she can't see us.

If I were you, knowing how my kids were at those ages, I'd probably get a king bed and a crib, have the 2 y.o. sleep with us and the baby sleep in the crib, but expect the baby to end up in bed with us too. (I breastfed, so that's what usually happened when both my girls were babies. DD1 never slept well in a crib in hotels so she slept in bed with us until she was old enough to sleep in her own bed.)
