U/S today

So I have a big baby. At 34w2d, my child weighs in at 6.5lb. Am I doing something wrong here? I am not diabetic and big babies do not run on either side of our family. I don't get to talk to my doctor until 1/16 :(

Re: U/S today

  • You are not doing anything wrong. Ari always measured big on the U/S and was around 7ish lbs at 35-36 weeks. I also measured between 2 and 4 weeks ahead at each apt. I was concerned but my Dr wasn't. She wound up being just over 8 lbs at birth (2 weeks late). Remember, they can be off a pound either way.
  • keep in mind the ultra sounds are very often wrong. One of my bf's had an U/S at 36 weeks that said her baby was huge. They even began to talk induction which freaked her out. Well he was born at 39 weeks and he was 18" and weighed 6lbs 3oz.

Yes exactly and a pound in a newborn is a huge amount to be off by.

  • Sarah you are NOT doing anything wrong...I had an u/s while in labor to make sure J was still head down and asked them to estimate what I would be pushing out my vag and they said 7.5/8lbs and he was a whopping 5lbs15oz.  Take what they say as a guesstimate.  I am sure if there were issues your doc would be calling you right away.  Hugs!

  • You're not doing anything wrong! Some babies are big and some babies are little. What's the worst case, the U/S is right and you deliver a 10 lb baby? (and they have at least a lb margin of error).

Besides, according to the handy preemie growth chart in by desk drawer, if she was 6.5 and born today, she'd still be under the 95th percentile. Totally normal :)

  • relax!  in order to get an average, some babies have to be big, just like some have to be small!  And honestly, that's not super huge, just on the bigger side of average.  Adriana was measuring a little over 6lbs at 35 weeks and she was born just shy of 8lbs (for her, based on how they grow over the last few weeks, our 35w u/s was probably pretty accurate)

  • You aren't doing anything wrong! She will be perfect, don't worry. Smile

  • Please don't worry about the size of the baby, growing is a good sign. More than likely the weight will be off by a full lb if not more. Most people that I have talked to have ended up with much smaller babies than the u/s predicted. Norah 3 days before birth was measured at over 9lbs. She was born weighting 7lbs 15.5oz.

  • THANK YOU!!! This makes me feel much better.

The ultrasound tech asked me if I was "diabetic because I have a huge baby". I was by myself today and I almost started crying :( I started thinking that maybe I eat too much or something. I've gained 32lbs which I feel like is a lot too, but I'm crazy swollen, so OB says a lot of that is probably water retention. I was just feeling really bad about myself after my appt this morning.

  • That is so horrific of that US tech. The last u/s I had told me that it can vary by a certain percentage either way (higher or lower)-- can't remember the percentage now. I remember at one u/s (maybe my 36 week one, it was estimated that she was about 6lbs)... she was 6lb15oz almost 5 weeks later at birth.

You are doing a great job... and you already have a scheduled c/s, right? If so, I don't see a reason to worry about her size!

    I gained 55 and didn't have a huge baby :)

  • What an awful, awful thing for the tech to say! As everyone above said, you have done nothing wrong!  And I too would take what they said with a grain of salt.  They can be off, but also some people just have big babies.  You have a healthy daughter who is growing in your belly and that should be all that matters!  You are almost there Sarah :)

  • seriously, for there to be an "average" that means some babies are big and some are small. how rude of the tech to comment like that!!! I would say something actually.

I feel your pain on the opposite though because at every growth scan people kept saying how tiny A was. She was 10 days late and 7lbs so yes, small, and right where they predicted she'd be. But not like off the charts small!

One of my friends almost just went right to a c-section b/c they were telling her her baby was way too big, etc. She was induced at 40 weeks b/c of low fluid and while he had a larger than average head he was 7lbs 12oz which really isn't that big! They were saying over 9lbs.

So yeah, these things can be wrong, though good techs usually get it pretty close and really you shouldn't let it get to you!

  • I was a 9lb baby and my sister was only 5lbs.  FWIW, my Mom said she'd take a big baby over a small baby any day.  I had zero issues where my sister had a few and Mom was so timid with her whereas she felt like I was half grown and so sturdy.
