"You for scuba, Rueben?"
lol, sorry...I couldn't resist.
DH has been talking about taking scuba classes and getting certified so I started looking around online and there seem to be quite a few places and options. Has anyone gotten certified or have any recs for places in the area?
I am not super confident in the water so this kind of freaks me out, but I think if I can do it I will feel good about accomplishing it and it could be a fun thing to do with DH and be able to scuba on vacations.
Any info you can share would be really appreciated.

DH's brothers are REALLY into scuba diving...his brother is a dive master, and they've been trying to get me to go take the class to be certified forever, but I've been kind of scared to do it. DH's brother has heard very good things about A-1 Scuba, located off S. Santa Fe and Oxford, across the street near the Costco. I want to get certified this spring. Want to go together? I will PM you my e-mail.

Yup, now I want to watch Along Came Polly. Ha!
Holy cow, we're going to have a little sister!!
It's been a while (10+ years) but I got certified with Underwater Phantaseas.
Loved them!
My one word of wisdom is to do your class room, do your pool work but save your check out dives for a vacation.
You can do your check outs on your first day and then go play for a few more days after that. It's not like the check out dives are wasted on a vacation. We ran thru the requirements and then played around for a while in a nice shallow area with plenty to see but without a depth that made me antsy as a first timer. I liked not getting dumped into 90 feet of water my very first time in an ocean but reveled in the ability to do a deeper ship dive with confidence by the end of my first week.
I think doing a check out dive in a cold @ss lake would have turned me off. Jumping into the ocean in Cancun for my check out dive totally cinched the deal for me. I was in awe and have been ever since.
Underwater is my sanctuary. I'd rather be in an ocean that any where else on earth. (although the mountains are a close second)
I think you're gonna love it!!!
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
The company I certified with is out of biz. I did my check out dive in Chatfield in the gravel pits in Jan in 34 degree water, no NOT recommend it. 2nd the opinion to do it on the first dive vacay you go on in warm water.
I have taken a trip with A1 in the past and it was a good experience (Grand Cayman), it's an amazing feeling and the things you see underwater can not be beat on ground as far as I'm concerned but like Shelley, it's my fav place to be. It's a fantastic thing to do w/ dh!
SD1 just certified locally and did a dive at The Aquarium downtown. I'll ask her who she went through.
Married Bio
Thanks for all the info, everyone!
D - I'd love to know more about how SD1 liked hers. Thanks!
I am certified and I did my pool training at Underwater Phantaseas, but did my open water certification at A1 Scuba. They are both great, but I like A1 better and they are nicer and seem more affordable.
I love love scuba! Wish I had a buddy, but DH isn't interested. You will love it! Good luck!
