anyone with a small/skinny baby?

DS is measuring around the 10th percentile for all of his stats now (nine months).  At his six month appt we were referred to a neurosurgeon because his head percentile gets small each visit.  Our pedi was worried his skull bones were closing prematurely.  Everything checked out OK as far as the skull.  That leaves us with genetics to blame for the small head, or the brain isn't growing as rapidly as it should. Either case, there is nothing we can do.

He acts completly normal/on track developmentally, I just never pictured having a tiny baby.  I need ideas for high fat/high iron baby food.  He is getting less interested in bottles because he LOVES finger food.

If your baby was small, did they catch up at any point, or are they still small?

Re: anyone with a small/skinny baby?

  • Sawyer is small with the exception of height.  Height he is 75th percentile and weight and head he is 15th percentile and that was at his 9 month check up.

His weight dropped in August after his surgery and hasn't picked back up but our doc stated that sometimes it is a genetic thing to see a drop.

I know this doesn't help answer any of your questions.  His 1 year check up is next month so we will see how it goes but just wanted to let you know that my little guy is small in at least 2 of his stats.

  • My DD started off as an average baby. She weighed close to 16lbs at 4 months. At her 15 month visit, she was 30" and 20.6 lbs. Now, she is almost 4, and weighs a mere 30lbs and is roughly 38" tall. She is smaller than most of her peers.

In fact, my DS is quite close to her in stats. He was 24lbs and 32.2" at his 15 month check. His head is off the charts though. He has a VERY big melon. Its pretty sad, when your 17 month old can wear some of the same clothes as your almost 4 year old. :)

  • S has a tiny head... always has.... it does continue to grow but is still only like 15-25%...ours I feel is genetics. Our pedi has no worries because there is always growth... he's just a lil peanut! ;-)

  • DS1 has always been about 5% for weight. I have him avocados quite a bit. Along with full-fat greek yogurt. (Whenever your pedi has you start yogurt.) Good luck with it all!

  • Haven-

how do I serve the avocado?  Just dice it up?

The greek yogurt is a good idea, and we got the OK.

Thanks girls.  It is amazing how different your pregnancies/kids can be.

  • I, myself was a very small baby, and despite my parents giving me all sorts of supplements and shoving food in my throughout my life, I am still very petite. My mom used to dress me in doll clothes, and I was so small, I slept in a wicker laundry basket for the first 6 months of my life. lol

  • B is small, whereas K is 97th% for height!  B was 7% for height at 12 months and has grown a bit to 12% at 18months.  He will be small, DH is short, so I blame him.  ;)  I was only concerned when he was 7% because i thought he would drop off the chart, but he recently started to outgrow some of his small clothes!

I would only be concerned again if he's still low on the scale around 24 months and will ask our pedi for her recommendations.

  • I have a tiny peanut too. Gavin has been the 10th percentile for height and weight at each visit. He is almost 15 months. His head is 25 percent. We do cheddar cheese, cream top whole milk and cream top yogurt- both from the hyvee organic area. He was just over 5lbs at birth so he was already 'behind' from the get go.

  • Joey started out in the 75th percentile for weight and height but quickly dropped down and has stayed in the 10th - 25th range. Her head however is a different story, she's been in the 90th percentile for head circumference since birth - I blame DH and his big melon!

J's size is mostly genetics - DH is short and all of his family is as well. We knew going into this that our kids would either be tall like me or small like him.

As far as food J always like fruits/veggies (not high in protein I know), yogurt, crackers, small bites of cooked chicken, etc.

I mashed it up so it was the consistancy of baby food. DS2 would eat it plain, but DS1 liked it mixed with greek yogurt. In fact, he'll still eat almost anything mixed with greek yogurt. They would probably eat chunks now, but they were eating avacados at 5 months, so it was still purees back then. Good luck!

  • C is between the 5th and 10th percentile for weight and head circumference and has been since birth. He's 75th percentile for height, though so just tall & skinny. He eats everything in sight so our pedi isn't concerned at this point. As long as he's not concerned, I try to not worry too much. Try good fats like avocado & yogurt come to mind as well as lean meats for iron. I've mashed up avocado, blended with a little formula/bm/applesauce to smooth out the texture as well as just feeding chunks. C pretty much likes anything we put in front of him, especially if its finger foods.

  • Lizzie runs small in the size of her head right around the 10% if I remember right.  They have done several tests and all has also checked out normal.  The doctor mesured my head and realized she just takes after me.  I can wear kids sunglasses and hats without a problem.  Lexi ran small in terms of height and weight for awhile and now has continued to shoot up.  So yes he may catch up and we have no problems in terms of brain difficulties with daugther or I.
  • I was also told that as long as they continue to see change than that is a good sign.  Its when there may be a hault in the growth.
