Considering a vacation this summer at one of these 2 locations. We would like to rent a house for the 2 of us and our then 18m old, something right on the water w/ a beach outside the door. We'd like a mix of relaxing and doing a little site seeing/shopping/dining out. Looking online at rental options it appears rentals are approx. $1500-$3K which we are ok w/. We would be driving from Chicago and both are the same distance. Any thoughts/suggestions? Anyone been to both - which would you recommend for a family trip like this?
Re: Cape Cod or Outer Banks?
i've been to both.
i think it will be easier to find a nice house close to the beach in the outerbanks! and the beach will probably be less crowded. i've been to both in july and there is a lot of traffic on the weekends in OBX but its much worse in cape cod. and of course it will be warmer in OBX. (water and air). to avoid the traffic we rent friday to friday in OBX. we rent though www.southernshores.com
It's cold to swim in the ocean at Cape Cod all year 'round. If you stay on the cape, particularly with a little one, I'd look at the bay side - Eastham is nice.
Never been to OBX.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!

I grew up in MA and summered on the Cape (my grandparents lived in Hyannis). As an adult I moved to VA and spent a fair number of summer on the OBX (Duck).
Of the two, I've still got a soft spot for the Cape. In my opinion, there's more to do more restaurant options, some theater (including community theater for kids), better shopping. OBX is beautiful, relaxing for a chill in-house vacation (and I think your $ gets you more in terms of rental space and proximity to the beach), but I think the entertainment options aren't as good as the Cape.
Both are really enjoyable and have good family-friendly options, so either decision is a win
!
I agree with above poster. If you want to be able to go out walk to dinner, get ice cream, shop etc- then the Cape will give you that perfect little new england vacation- but the rental will be small (cottage style) and maybe walkable to the beach. Beaches vary based on location in the Cape. Bay, sound and ocean are all things to consider. I prefer the bay with little ones.
If you are looking for more of a beach-all-day vacation with doing BBQ and cooking in a beautiful house with a pool and deck then OBX is the way to go. If you go to OBX you can still go out for dinner and ice cream- but most likely it will be someplace you drive to.
My family house on the Cape but still rent a house in the OBX for a week each summer.
