Favorite skiing close to DC?

Can anyone recommend your favorite ski resort close to DC for a weekend trip? Preferably within a 4 hour drive (or less).  Thanks!

Re: Favorite skiing close to DC?

  • years ago I went to  http://www.skiwhitetail.com/ and liked it

  • Snowshoe is more like 5 hours away (WV), but IMO, it's definitely worth the trip. The skiing is far better (more snow, varied terrain) that any where within just a couple hours. I've been going to Snowshoe since I was little kid, so I'm pretty biased, but it really is a fantastic resort for this part of the country...and it's really quite beautiful there.

Let me know if you need suggestions on where to stay, eat, etc on the mountain.

  • Wisp in Deep Creek, Md is good for a weekend trip.  We rent a house up there every year.  It's about 3 hours away, and they have snow tubing, ice skating, snow mobiling, and nearby waterfalls that you can hike to.  There are also restaurants and bars there for other entertainment.
  • For the closest, Whitetail or Liberty. Otherwise Canaan Valley or Snowshoe in WVA.
  • If you are going for the weekend definately go to Snowshoe or Wisp and not Whitetail, Liberty, or Mountain top. Check the snow reports on their websites as well. As awesome as the warm weather has been it isn't good for snow! That's another reason that the close resorts may not be the best. I think Whitetail is only 80% open with a small base. I'm still going to try to go this weekend, but only becuase it's an easy daytrip.
  • Ditto Canaan or Wisp.  I think Canaan has better skiing, but Wisp makes for a better overall experience, IMO (more restaurants, more options for places to stay, etc).

  • Timberline is way better than Canaan, if you're headed to Canaan Valley. Deerfield Resort offers reasonable accomodations and Big Johns has great food. We also like Best of Canaan Realty -- Foxwood Cabin.
