Transition to toddler bed

I know this question has been asked a number of times - but I admittedly didn't pay much attention as it wasn't applicable to my current situation at the time.

However, we are making the transition to a toddler bed this weekend for DD - 30 months old.  She has a convertible crib - so her toddler bed will be technically the same frame/crib that she has now, so I'm hoping this will help.

One question is surrounding their ability to wander in the night.  We have a 2 story and I'm scared of her walking around downstairs, did anyone put up a gate on their 2nd floor?  Or how did you all handle this?  Perhaps I'm over-thinking it - as usual :)

Obviously I'm just looking for suggestions on how to ease her into it, tips for night time waking and basically just any help you can provide.

Many thanks!

Re: Transition to toddler bed

  • We just transitioned Aubrey (she is just turning 2 this weekend) and we have her door way baby-gated so she can't wander the house at night.. The first couple nights we had to close her door tight so she wouldn't just stand at the gate and scream but after 3-4 nights she got it and now she asks to get in her bed instead of being rocked.. Good luck!

  • We did a handle lock on the inside of the door, so that it was easy to open for adults, but he couldn't get out.  Left it on for a few months, he only tried to come out once or twice, when he needed us.  Thinking of putting it back on now, as he's a pro at procrastinating sleeping now.

  • We transitioned Carson at 14 months.  At that time he did get up and wander around our split level.  To prevent this, we shut his door and had the baby proof knob covers on the inside of the door so he couldn't open them.  His bedroom is 2 feet from ours so we could hear him if he started crying and wanted to get out/come to us, but we didn't have to worry about him falling down the stairs in the night.

Now Carson is 31 months and we just leave the door open.  If he needs something he comes in our room.  We don't have any issues with him just randomly wandering around the house.

  • We just transitioned Parker to a toddler bed.  We put up a baby gate so he can't wander around.  The first few nights he cried at the gate but now he has no problems going to bed.

  • We plan on closing her door, once we stop using the Angelcare monitor. Right now I use it so it goes off if she gets out of bed. She's only done it once, usually she cries to 'get down!'. Her bed is a little tall so she isn't brave enough to climb out yet.

But as I said, we plan on leaving her door close with a sound monitor on. We close it when she goes to bed and then open it when we go to bed, just because I feel more comfortable with it open.

We thought about using a gate, but if G can see us, she wants us. However, if we are 'out of site, out of mind' she's ok.

  • Using the angelcare monitor as an alarm is brilliant BP! I may have to dig ours out.

Ana transitioned at 18mos or so. She's downstairs and we're upstairs so I didn't worry too much about gates, etc. If she gets out of bed she walks up the stairs to my room.

At 18 mos though she was really too big for the toddler bed that converts from her crib so we went to a large twin bed. We put a body pillow under the fitted sheet at the edge of the bed to buffer any falling out. She never had a problem but Katen fell out a time or two when she was little. She's a sounder sleeper though.
