I just noticed on my FB that my aunt has decided to become a "life coach" (she has been at a stay at home mom for 15 years now, not that there is anything WRONG with that, I just think she could probably use some coaching of her own, since her kids are in high school and she just sits and drinks coffee all day and updates her status every 20 minutes)....
I don't understand life coaching. My stepMIL is a "life coach" as well and it just seems to me a code for "I want to sound cool but I don't really do anything but give my friends advice". She tries to talk with me about how "similar" our careers are and I'm like, "um, no"
It's particularly irritating to me because I spent YEARS and $$ on professional education and licensing for counseling/psychotherapy and these women take a few unregulated online courses and consider themselves similar professionals.
I guess the post of this email should have been another "I don't understand"..... insert "life coaching"
Re: "Life coaching"- Help me understand
In my mind, this is like being a Big Brother/Big Sister, but to an adult.
In otherwords, and unqualified person who hangs out with someone who doesn't have means to get actual help.

Yeah, it's kind of like an adult guidance counselor, but barely qualified.
I never really got it either, but have heard of a couple of "life coaches".
I am glad I have a good mom, she's my life coach.
And gets paid for it. Big Brothers/Big Sisters are volunteers.

Thank you guys, I thought I was just being judgmental and bratty..... lol
There's someone on my FB who's doing this and I don't get it either.
She does everything from helping people shop for a new wardrobe to helping them find a career they're interested in.
I wouldn't say she's "counseling" though. To me, it just sounds like a glorified "friend" who is paid.
Life coaching is someone who doesn't want a real job giving advice to someone that has no confidence in their own decision making capabilities.
What a joke.
haha yeah! An I agree you should be pissed that she was comparing her bs job to your career
